Rehr Takes Aim At Satcasters, Hails Broadcaster's Digital Future
Addressing the National Press Club in Washington, NAB President/CEO David Rehr outlined his vision for the future of broadcasting and reasserted radio and TV's position as the overwhelming choice of media in America.
He conceded that local stations have "inadvertently relinquished some of the excitement occurring in broadcasting to our competitors. That ends today, because we have a very compelling story to tell." ( I hear a hype job coming )
"inadvertently relinquished" that's just not true period, you treated the listener like they had no alternative. you refused the advice from all of the leading industry experts that had a very simple plan "first just fix the content" With some of the suits crying we have no money for that, then the listeners started the great satrad migration and the advertisers followed yes it was truly clearly honestly inadvertently........!!
Satellite radio on the other hand, planned a functional national platform that could support advertiser across all of North America, with a single purchase.Which is what the old broadcasters should have acted to do twenty-five years ago to support their advertisers fully but again they inadvertently failed to deliver on what the industry required.
Rehr said, that "by any measure, broadcasting remains the undisputed leader in news and entertainment."
(Ok, then lets just check the math on this subject below)
Rehr referenced "misperceptions" about satellite radio, which he said has "done a good job" hyping a still-unprofitable product. Rehr said:
I give him this point, but will note also that I would prefer to be hyping a growing industry that includes music, over another sector which plans to move further into talk programing and away from the music people need and want.
• Satellite radio's reported 12 million subscribers compares to 260 million local radio listeners per week. lol when will it ever stop, what they need to say is we count every person from age six to seventy six that could have listened this week for a minimum of a full five minute period while visiting the doctors office.
• He alleged that Sirius counts on its customer list some 500,000 subscribers derived from "empty cars that sit in dealer parking lots." (my math shows much less) even Mr jacoby from bank of america placed the number at (350k) that should tell you something.
Im a bit confused by the comments from Clear Channel this past week in a press release where they claimed one hundred ten million weekly listeners, for the 1,200 stations they own and or operate. not that it really matters. this should tell you how bad, it has become for some of the other radio stations after you see the math below. which imho clearly indicate major trouble for some stations if you subtract out the clear channel listeners
directly from the press release

Rehr said both radio and TV broadcasters are "seizing the digital future" through the transition to HD Radio and DTV. Read Rehr's entire speech here.
I wonder why there was no mention of how many station owners are refusing this new HD platform Do to the failure to deliver what was promised to the broadcasters, starting with radios ? the station footprint has been greatly reduced in many cases by 40 percent...and just forget about am HD.
Or the issue of vehicle dash boards, which are few and far between for hd radio as the auto manufactures have requested the first and last months rent for the wanted space in advance. which by the way sirius and xmsr have pretty well locked up for the next few years....
what we know radio has about thirteen thousand stations with 260 million listeners divided by 13,000 earthly stations equals only 20,000 per station weekly ouch...
now on to satrad with the real total weekly listener/sub base of 12.3 million divided by the total channel count of 304 currently it equals 40,473
now lets do xmsr for fun with 7.185 million subs divided by 170 total channels equals 42,264 per channel weekly
so the numbers for sirius are 5.119 million divided by 134 channels equals a weekly listener channel total of 38,201
i wonder if that's what Mr Rehr was trying to tell me i got the message !
I sure hope the National advertisers also did, satrad can use the extra revenue...!
