David Stewart

Once again, we've lost another from the sales ranks, as David Stewart passed away. I remember David as sales manager at WREC back in the 80's. He was a Silver Medalist and past president of the Memphis Advertising Federation.

Sorry to hear the news. Dave was one of the most cheerful fellows I've ever known. He was always upbeat and had a smile and a good word to everyone he met. He was easily one of the best sales managers I ever worked with. He will be missed on so many levels. I count myself fortunate to have known and worked with Dave.

Ditto on that Alan...Easily one of the nicest people I had the pleasure to work with. David will be missed and my thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family.

Rick Earwood

I cannot resist adding my thoughts about David Stewart. He truly was one of the classiest folks I had the pleasure of being around in the business. He was highly regarded by all in the world of media and advertising. As most know, he was also a valued and loyal member of the University of Memphis athletic department family. He was special indeed.

Grayson, Tynes, Earwood and Sears ALL on this post...you know I had to jump in. As for you Allan, I missed the apparent retirement of you and Blake. Say it ain't so.

On another topic Mr. Tynes, I hope relative newcomers to the business can appreciate the rich history detailed in your narratives. There are a lot of WREC AM/FM/TV alums in broadcast heaven smiling at your writings.

To Dan...I can't ever remember the years it seems, just the people involved. Dave must have started after '81. He definitely came after Mike Murphy, the Sue-the Sales-Manager Poster Boy, and before John I-Am-Not-A-Crook Durham and I believe it was about the time Louise Heifitz was Rock 103's Sales Manager. Jack ? was in there somewhere. Remember how he'd take those log walks over on Lamar and nobody knew where he was or what he was doing?

To Bob...yep, I hung it up March 15 as did Blakely with the sale of KWAM. We'd been working for Concord Media Group, Inc. the previous 4 years, not for CC, weird as that sounds. Check out Leonard's business website:

Uhhh, which Bill?

Dries - back working as a reporter for WREC after leaving the Commercial Appeal. A great journalist.

Williams - was fired as GM years back, returned to Winston-Salem and began work again as a salesman-still there, I think, at WSJS, the original station in the old Summit line. Nice guy who got Peter Principled out.

Miller - Business Manager in the Peabody, probably before your time. I don't know if he's still with us.

Dollar - Also before your time...Music Director at WREC, left after our union vote failed, went to Birmingham at WERC for a couple of years and returned to middle Tennessee where his dad had a station. Bill worked there a while and got on board with NASCAR as an announcer. He even had a cameo in Burt Reynolds' "Stroker Ace" in 1983. He was killed in a car wreck in North Carolina in 1996. Really nice guy-was married to Margaret Beatty, who had been a copywriter at WREC and a great gal.

Must have been more Bills than that, but I'm drawing a blank. You know Leonard and I have talked about trying to put down the names and jobs of all the people we worked with at WREC over the years, but the task is too daunting...gotta be well over a thousand people!

And, of course, Bill Thomas (as Art Mehring referred to him, "the BT Express").
Also in sales, Bill Graves.

Yep, Bill Graves, salesman and Southern Gentleman, died several years ago. Bill Thomas, of "Handle it, Handle it, Handle it" and "Do it like a boy dog" infamy, is alive and at large.

I was referring to Bill Williams. I remember J. Boland always joking about Bill being cloistered up in his office wth his crayons and coloring books. Funny stuff.

Dries...good man.

Dan

Hi gang...

There are some folks who choose to remain anonymous...and that's fine. But I'm sure there are some in that group I'd love to catch up with not to mention Allan, Rob, et al, who are less secretive. To that end...

Cheers to the old days of Crayon Bill, Poster Boy and all the rest.
