Radio & Records is reporting that Davidson Media is swapping 980 WBZK/York-Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill to Michael Glinter's, Satellite Radio Network, for Glinter's, 1380 WPYR/Baton Rouge, La.

Radio Online is reporting that Michael Glinter has moved to South Carolina and has sold all of his stations in Florida with the exception of Contemporary Christian 95.7 WGCX-FM/Navarre, FL. It looks like Glinter's previously owned stations were Religious.

I found mention of the WBZK trade in the NAB dispatch I receive each day. I thought it funny they refer to the station as WBZK Charlotte. I doubt many people in Charlotte know about this little station licensed to York, SC.

Then again around here WBT is the only AM station with an audience. Even the religious stations get trumped by Billy Graham's WMIT-FM in Black Mountain.

Reading the postings about the ol' 980 really brings back memories of working for the Sigmon family. It was my first job in radio. 9a-5p Monday through Friday; 5a-12p Saturday; 6a-1p Sunday.

Yep. Seven days per week at $5 per hour WITH NO OVERTIME.

Did it for five months straight and had to quit just to get a day off.

He'll have to use the Chester studios because I heard the York studios were torn down after the fire department there used the old building for practice......

I guess you never forget your first job in radio. I know I sure won't.

Yep, I went crawling back into the radio biz when K99 was on its last legs. I didn't know the old place out by the Tastee Freeze on the edge of town had been burned to the ground, but I've been out of the area for ten years and last worked there more than 14 years ago. I wonder if Mr. Sigmon or "Miss Peggy" are even still around. What I remember is they had state of the art equipment for 1966 !!!! Just a few years after I left, the Sigmons would sell the FM (WDZK, later known as WBZK-FM) to WBT after boosting its power. I lost track of what happened after that. It was long hours at low pay, but it did get me headed for bigger and better things.

It has been posted on the SC board that Jeff Sigmon (son?) is the man behind WRBK-FM (90.3, licensed to Richburg, SC), a non-comm oldies station, that sounds pretty good.  Big playlist, nice sounding jingles and a signal that touches parts of South Charlotte.  106.1 should sound so good!

Jeff is the son of the former owners of WBZK and I knew he got involved in a non-com down in that area after mom and pop sold the original station. In its final days (early 90's), K99 went to a "classic oldies" format, so it sounds like he's trying to do the same thing. That's the extent of my knowledge since I left the greater Rock Hill area a decade ago. I'm not sure where the revenue streams are if your license is non commerical, unless  you're able to do that "underwriting" thing that public radio does as a work around.

90.3 sounds amazing. Probably one of the best oldies station I have heard in a while. Any plans for them to expand their coverage into charlotte? I get them pretty clear on the southwest are of charlotte.

They probably can't get much closer to Charlotte. The frequency is right between WFAE at 90.7 and to WDAV at 89.9. That would put them as second adjacent channel to two max-powered stations, which the FCC won't allow under current interference rules.

Later....

I'd say WFAE's simulcast station in Hickory, WFHE-90.3, is the bigger problem as far as WRBK growing it's signal toward the north. Still, WRBK has a pretty good signal in south Charlotte. RBK is on my car radio most of the time and I've never had any reception problems anywhere south of uptown. But, I agree, RBK really sounds good--20 times better than 106.1. I've got to say, RBK has done a really good job of making a computerized radio station sound hot. How do they get the transistions between songs/jingles/etc. to sound so smooth and natural?

I haven't listened in awhile but I have never heard any stereo separation on their music even though they are transmitting in stereo. They would probably have a stronger signal if they just turned off the stereo pilot.
