Davidson Media Buying WSRC

I noticed that R&R is reporting the sale of WSRC (1410 Durham) to Davidson Media. It will now be under the ownership of the group that owns its cross-town competition, WTIK (1310) and (I think) also 1460 from Fuquay-Varina.

Probably the biggest change could be the studio location...with the likely destination of the WSRC studios being the 707 Leon Street home of WTIK. I hope not much changes on 1410. This station is an icon in Durham's African-American community.

WSRC and the late WCRY (1460 in Fuquay-Varina) were jointly owned by Willis Broadcasting, but Willis surrendered the license of WCRY to the FCC last year, as part of a deal to either lessen or escape some fines. I hope Davidson invests in WSRC's technical plant. It doesn't sound very good on-air and the station, on more than one occasion, has broadcast on channels other that their assigned 1410 kHz after switching to their night pattern.

Matt,

You can almost bet there will be changes at WSRC. Just about all of Davidson Media's stations are brokered Spanish or Gospel. The station may stay Black Gospel, but it would probably be brokered. Davidson does this with their recently acquired WOLT (Praize 103.3) in the Greenville-Spartanburg market.

Wills operates stations on a shoe string budget...in the case of WURB in windsor, back in 2002, they were using a 60 min cassette tape and a auto reverse tape player, they changed the tape out once a WEEK..so he prolly turned in WCRY's app to avoid fines...as he has "friends" inside the FCC
