Davie Does Dallas

Dave Kelly has been promoted by Citadel to Regional Program Director and will relocate to Dallas where he will add programming duties for KCKS as well as retaining WGKX in Memphis and KDF. Wonder what it's going to be like on the hill without Davie's daily presence?

He's got Polaroids of Fareed and Judy with mountain goats.
That's how.

I've yet to understand the thinking that permeates the industry today. Why have 1 guy program 3 stations in 3 different markets? This is not a knock against Dave, I don't know him and have never met him. I know he has had success in the past, but hasn't exactly lit up Nashville with KDF.

With the stakes so high in 3 large markets like Nashville, Memphis, and Dallas, doesn't it make sense to have 3 top-flight programmers handling each station to maximize ratings? I know the thinking is to save money, but 1 guy can't keep all 3 stations maximized and operating at a high level. You'll have 3 mediocre stations at best.

There are at least 50 programmers sitting on the beach with as much or more talent and success as Dave Kelly.

Citadel isn't alone in this thinking. It's the stupid "sheep" mentality that drives the industry these days. Amazing!

This has been the downfall of radio since 1996. As long as the guys at the top are making the same, they don't care, nor do they have to care. (Remember when Cumulus thanked their employees for working a week for free? That was so the CEO's could continue to live the lifestyle they've become accustomed to. They can afford what we can't - still they want more.)

As far as Dave Kelly's position, I'm happy for him. If he gets paid a sinful amount of money to do whatever Corp wants him to do, let him have it. Or maybe they got him cheaper than someone else. I'm sure he's making plenty of money while Citadel is saving plenty, and that's what it seems to be all about. It sounds like he's on his way to becoming another Jan Jeffries.
