Davy Jones was BIG...not tall...BIG

;D

Everybody is smiling at Hoosier Park in Anderson. Over 30,000 people came out to celebrate the 4th of July....and see Davy Jones in concert. The traffic was backed up on I 69 trying to get into the gates of Hoosier Park...and Davy Jones rocked the house. Over 5,000 seats full for this Oldies 101.9 event. All I can say is Arbitron - you are WRONG AGAIN.. This station is on its way to kicking some Indy radio a$$!

Never been to one of WFMS's free concerts at the state fair? People pack in like sardines to that little wooden "grandstand" and stand on the lawn, etc. etc. Don't think that area could hold 5000 people, but they have one about every night during the State Fair ;)

The recognition of our station is certainly appreciated.

We're gearing up for another fun State Fair with some outstanding perfomrers, some you know and some you don't... yet.

I do have to point out one thing:

The WFMS Free Stage, located in Farm Bureau Insurance Celebration Park in the northwest corner of the Fairgrounds, is very different from the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand.

5,000-plus fans routinely show up at Free Stage events, particularly during good weather or days where a bigger act is on the Grandstand later that night.

As for the Grandstand concerts, for many of which WFMS is the presenting station, the capacity is much higher.

yeah, they're AT LEAST a 3.4 instead of the 3.2 that evil Arbitron has them at ... but Russ owes you a bonus for the employee enthusiasm!

For all the vitriol leveled at WKLU and it's ... interesting... owner, let's at least give non-sarcastic credit to a fine event. The turnout for Davy Jones was impressive and as a broadcast entity, it seems like they're (slowly but surely) coming into their own.

It may be that since the shift from classic rock to oldies wasn't as stark a contrast as if they'd switched to hip hop, perhaps the expectations of some were not met. But as a fairly new listener to the station, it seems that they're doing the things you'd expect an oldies station to do.

So, as a frequent reader but infrequent contributer here, I'd say kudos to the folks at WKLU.

That said, I will point out that Hoosier Park has been advertising in the market HEAVILY over the last month and Friday was the kickoff to their Grand Opening celebration, so the event benefitted from that as well.

BINGO! The EVENT and the promotion by Hoosier Park is what attracted the crowds. The station did the wise thing and ATTACHED itself to what already was going to be a big event. Unless it was only promoted on WKLU, it was NOT only WKLU listeners.

That said, it was good marketing on WKLU's part to take advantage of the massive amount of Hoosier Park advertising for the event. I'm sure a lot of people saw the banner.

But Q95 was helped out by WISH-TV in promoting the event ... perhaps it is WISH that is really growing :p

The WFBQ fireworks show downtown was viewed by over 100,000 people. That shows that Q-95 is really growing!

I hope you're being sarcastic!! That show could have been sponsored by WCBK and the low-powered TV station in Martinsville and it still would have drew a pretty big crowd. Shuckins, it's them thar fireworks they shoot from that big building downtown.

I agree with IndyDan... these were both free.

Look how excited everyone gets in Anderson for the
Midnight Parade...even if the crowds were low this year
for it. Can't blame that on gas prices when everyone
that attends walks to it downtown.

Fireworks downtown Indy... didn't Hank have it last year?
Big crowd then too...weather also plays a factor in all this.

I think your talking bout the Old WENS now Hank's Skyconcert. Which happens later on in the summer

This just proves again that the ratings by arbitron are not accurate, and are probably even paid for and in the pocket of the corporates.

Everybody at this concert knew about wklu and most were listeners.

Way to go Russ! Keep up the great promotions.

With PPM measurement WKLU's audience would show up as being much larger, but so would WFMS, WIBC etc. The relative audience level will likely be about the same though. It has nothing to do with payoffs.
