A station in the Redding, CA market (Mix 101.1) seems to be trying out the concept of "dayparting". They sound very AC in the morning with John Tesh, playing a lot of 80s and 90s soft songs. Then in middays they play more upbeat 90s through today stuff, and in the afternoon (Ryan Seacrest) and evenings (Billy Bush) they sound very mainstream CHR, playing currents in the Gaga-Britney-Katy genre.
The few people I have asked about the flow of this station (mainly family members in their 30s) seem to love it, and at least my sisters (36 and 32) are very passionate about it, even though judging from a radio standpoint it is not uncommon to hear trainwrecks throughout the day, and all of their shows are syndicated, except for the midday girl, who seems to be voicetracked.
I find this concept very interesting and wonder if it's a better alternative than using Citadel's or Dial Global's satellite formats (for small markets anyway). Any other stations out there doing something similar? I've heard this with Classic Rock (days) and Oldies (nights), but not with the AC-Hot AC-CHR combination.
