Daystar 53 is still on the air

As part of the analog shutdown on Friday I could have sworn that all channels 52 and above were going away yet for some crazy reason WDTA channel 53 is still in analog on 53. Low power stations were not required to go digital yesterday but I understood they had to leave if they were on 52 and above since the tv band is ending at channel 51.

Is this Daystar being lazy or does anyone know if low powers above 51 can stay on the air.

Where I'm at right now WYFX-LP 62 (FOX Youngstown, OH) analog is still on also. They are also on in DT on 27-2. Like you, I thought all channels above 51 had to sign off. I'll check and see what I can find out.

One interesting thing about the Youngstown market is both CBS 27-1 and FOX 27-2 are both in HD. From what I have read it's the only market broadcasting a HD 720p signal on both the main and sub channel.

I spoke to an engineer at Daystar last week. I noticed that they applied for a digital transmitter license but it wasn't active, so I called Daystar (WDTA's affilliation headquarters). The engineer told me something that he said has not been reported to the general public. All LOW POWER TV stations are exempt from the big cutoff deadline. WDTA will have its digital broadcast up and running by the end of August and then the analog signal will be cut off.

But still, the general question remains -- were LPTVs out of core required to vacate 52-69 right now, or are current stations exempt from the eviction? Since there are several reports of out-of-core LPTVs and Class As still there, I'm thinking that there was some change in policy when the national shutoff date was rescheduled.

No, low-power stations aren't held to this either - there are even some permits for new ones in 52-69! It's my understanding they're secondary to the new non-TV users though -- they can be bumped from their channels when/if the new users need them.
