Pretty impressive you'd hear Sacramento in the middle of the day...that's a good 600+ miles. What makes it more impressive is how poor the ground conductivity is at your location.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ground_conductivity_smallm3.jpg .

I've got a pretty good hunch that that wasn't groundwave reception. 1530 kHz is practically shortwave, and those frequencies are highly susceptible to daytime skywave this time of year.
 
I used a Grundig G5 and the original whip antenna. Nothing else.
