Daytime DXing about 2PM today on 11/22/2009

Here's what I've gotten across the AM band today about 2PM local time.

800: CKOR Penticton, BC
840: something faint, maybe KSWB Seaside, OR
860: KPAM Troutdale, OR
910: KTRO Portland, OR with possibly Drumheller, AB under
970: KCMD Portland, OR
1120: KPNW Eugene, OR
1160: KSL Salt Lake City, UT (AT 2PM!!!!!! )
1230: Under KWYZ, the graveyard audience is filling up, up to 3 stations at times
1240: same with this
1510: KGA Spokane, WA
1530: KFBK Sacramento, CA!!!

Yea i have also noticed good am conditions during the day again lately!!

1.06/1.21 from Phili
1.52 from Buffalo

Very good daytime traffic!

I've gotten Chi-nyc-boston AM's at that time of day/year on a rountine basis from distances up to 700-1000 mi on many late fall days. It's the silly season.

More DX. About 3PM today, I tuned to 1050 AM, faded out KBLE and got a decent standards music station under. Also heard Springfield, OR again. I'm positive it's KEYF Dishman, probably my very first logging of KEYF. KDUN Reedsport on 1030 has been coming in like a local, mornings and afternoons. In the midday, a WEAK KMAS Shelton comes in, but in some directions, KDUN is "right there". Also, the graveyard on 1240 AM had lit up with Billy Joel's "Piano Man". KGY Olympia? 590 KQNT Spokane comes in like a local starting at about 3:45PM. Heard a faint carrier on 1570 AM, not sure if it's Lodi, CA or not. 1160 AM had KSL at about 1PM (   ) but VEEERRRYYYY faint. 1510 KGA and 1530 KFBK are poor-fair during the midday, after 11AM and before 2PM. Later...

1060 is KYW
1210 is WPHT
1520 is WWKB (formerly WKBW)

Later...

Even MORE DX. About 4:59PM, I got a station on 1390 kHz with a 400 hz tone nonstop. Someone testing? I thought it was the V/O saying "CBS Radio Networks Channel 42". No sign of the V/O. Our lights are on, and they make the AM band crappy at night, due to the loud light noise. Noticing 600 CJWW Saskatoon above-average tonight with Brooks & Dunn's "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You". 610 CKYL is coming in again, from Alberta. More to come. Later...

Wow. That's amazing. KSL and KFBK are roughly 700 miles from your location?

The angle of the sun is very low up where you are this time of year compared to much of the country.

My biggest early catch like that was WKBW 1520 from New Jersey long ago but that was only 300 miles or so.

Unfortunately, those kind of early skywave catches aren't as good down here.

Last year in early December, I was up in central Alberta and picked up solid daytime signals from Portland's KEX (until 11:30 am local) and KSL (all day long). I was actually listening to KSL's afternoon show as if it was local while driving around Leduc and Edmonton at 2 in the afternoon! Caught lots of daytime skip while up there, including 'the Flag' 1100 WZFG from Fargo/Moorhead. All are several hundred miles from that area.

At this time of year, with the low sun angle, daytime skip is a distinct possibility - especially if you're above 45 degrees north latitude. Bothell, Washington certainly meets that criteria.

Few years ago most interesting was 890 CJDC DAWSON CREEK @ 11AM in Boise, ID. Solid signal for over an hour. 770 CHQR, 1010 CBR are regular winter daytimers.

I wonder what the DX is like in northern Canada & Alaska this time of year when it's almost always dark.
Must be almost 24 hours of DX except when there's an Aurora.
Anybody here ever experience this?
