Daytime Skywave Starting At 1:30 Past Solar Noon

Definitely had some daytime skywave today around 2:30 PM which is about 2 hrs past solar noon here. Driving down Lake Shore Drive in Chicago you could hear a couple of Toronto stations. First one was 1610 AM CHHA which came in quite well. Also on 1540 AM there was a Chinese-language station which was very likely CHIN, also in the Toronto area. I believe I heard CHHA for a very brief period on Wednesday too before one of the traveler information channels took over. I am not sure if the weather has anything to do with this phenomenon but it has been unusually cold here for the time of year along the route to Toronto, including some snow, so maybe that helped.
Probably a month from now when the calendar turns to December, you will be able to get some solar noon daytime sky wave, especially on the X-Band. I have never had any luck with solar noon daytime sky wave down here in Arizona, but up north, it is very well possible!
I wonder how it is up in cities like Fairbanks, Alaska where sky wave would be 24/7 in the winter months even if stations are on daytime power?
the slightest solar upset ruins reception on AM and SW in Alaska.
My best reception from central alaska was a 500 watt non directional signal from western australia at night.. also heard a 1 kw graveyard channel from 2500 miles away in CA
Back in my IRCA days there was a guy who had previous lived in northern Alaska, north of Fairbanks. He said that on a good MW DX day/night, the reception would be sort of like turning your antenna... During certain hours, Asia would predominate, then Europe, then the rest of North America, etc.

Yes, the Arctic SDR is great when there are no solar incidents. Last year lots of Alaska stations were heard. Depending on the time you listen you can hear the Middle East, Europe, North America, and Asia. Probably alot more is possible, but that's what I heard at various times.
December can be very good for daytime skywave around noon in northern latitudes if conditions are right. A few times in the Chicago area I remember hearing many east coast stations mid day and not necessarily high on the band. WABC, WCBS, KDKA, WBZ and others were heard in the midwest during Dec around noon. You just never know when the band will open up that wide.
I've mentioned this before, but back in the early 60's at around noon EST in the winter from Cleveland I heard 4VEH from Cap Hatien, Haiti with 10 kw on 1035. The clear split frequency helped, but it was great north-south daytime skywave that made the logging possible.
4VEH was an easy catch at night, but I only heard it once in the daytime.
That is a great catch. The DX I heard in the midwest at noon CST was mostly from the northeast US, Toronto and Montreal Canada. I heard it at least twice in two different Decembers in the early 70s. I was shocked to hear the "WABC chime" mid day.
