Daytimer KBRT on 740 is still on the air tonight... Does KCBS know?

KBRT a 10kw daytimer from Avalon (Santa Catalina) in SoCal is still on the air at full power it seems. Anyone in the bay area fringes check reception of KCBS and any interference from KBRT?

In Napa, where KCBS' signal goes about 500-watts in my direction (to protect stations up North),
I cannot hear any interference from KBRT or anyone else as of 10:41 PDT...steady as KCBS' signal
goes...

I bet it's very interesting in Bakersfield moreso, though...in the daytime, I got to hear both 740s
fight it out when i listened in my car some years ago. I could just imagine the nighttime "battle"...

Slight correction - KBRT isn't just a daytimer. They are licensed to broadcast at night, albeit with only 113 watts. My guess is that there is some sort of automatic mechanism set up to switch power, and it wasn't properly calibrated for the month of October.

Dave yes they are authorized for night operation, but they don't use it... Think about this... 113 watts at night with KCBS's signal beaming strongly down doesn't make that signal very usable unless you live on Santa Catalina Island ;). Even with their full power last night, it was easy to null them (with a portable radio) and clearly hear KCBS. Since I live in Orange County where their daytime signal is the 2nd strongest for me (after KFI) I know this for a fact that they sign off either at local sunset or during some months they sign off 15 minutes after local sunset.

PS-- I gave them a phone call this morning and they seemed unaware they were on, though I didn't speak with their CE.

Out of curiosity, when DID KBRT get their 113-watt night authorization?
Last I was in the Southland was July 2001, and at Palos Verdes (with
Santa Catalina Island in view), I heard KCBS loudly...

I'm guessing sometime in the last few years they received the 113-watts?

Yeah, I don't have the benefit of local knowledge that you do for sure. I guess I figured with all that salt water they managed to hit a little bit of the western edge of the market, even with 113 watts - sort of like KPIG does here at night against KGA. So do they normally have a sign-off message or do they just disappear?

Yes they have a very short announcement that they are leaving the air stating their owner (Crawford Broadcasting) their power and I think their studio location (Costa Mesa) and TX location (Avalon). Then poof(!) you hear KCBS (usually).

In the AM when sunrise is late (like October it's 7 AM approx) they are on lower power (I really don't think it's just the 113 watts) and then without powering off, all of a sudden they're at the full 10kw at sunrise.

Their pre-sunrise authority allows them to operate with 500 watts beginning at 6:00 AM.

On Monday night, I drove from the Lancaster/Palmdale area to Bakersfield via routes 14 and 58. This was around midnight to about 2:00am. The radio was on 740AM the entire way, and KCBS-AM was loud and clear all the way through--a pretty solid signal. At no time did I hear interference or signal competition from elsewhere. Just the occasional blips of static, mostly courtesy of high power lines, and perhaps locomotives nearby...

Where did you get that info??

I can't "'deep link" to the one for KBRT, but it's found on the FCC's CDBS search page under "station information." http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/sta_sear.htm

You can view the "correspondence folder" for imported letters on any station and see their pre-sunrise and post-sunrise authorizations, if any, as well as some communications about STA's and the like. But note that just because a station has a PSA or PSSA doesn't mean they're actually using them, since in many cases it's just not worth it.

Thanks for that link/info, jd. I will bookmark it... 8)
