Daytona Beach Radio..in the past

Just wondering if anyone can recall what the line up of formats and stations DB had back in '94 and '95
I went to search through the stations online to see what has changed..and it's ovbiously ALOT. I don't recall ANY of the FM's..I can remember some station I listened to called 'The Gator'? or..The Frog? I dunno. something off the wall...
My family took a vaction to Fla then, and we havn't been back since...

-Anybody want to ellaborate what happened...?

A good place to start searching is www.cflradio.net. We have histories, formats and loads of other info on all Central Florida Stations.

Which reminds me. If you anyone would like to contribute information, corrections, pictures or sound clips, drop me a line at [email protected]. We would like to become THE source for the History of Central Florida Radio.

99.9 was a big top-40 station licensed to Palatka
93.1 was WKRO - alternative
98.1 was frog country

Those are the Daytona - specific stations I remember, other than non-comms which are frozen in time

At that time, WHOG was a simulcast of the talk station in town. And (thx cflradio.com) 103.3 was top 40.

Now the line-up looks kinda like...

93.1 WKRO: Country off the (satelite) bird
98.1: Hispanic, Mega 98.1 out of Titusville
99.9: Moved-in to Jacksonville
95.7: Now classic rock WHOG
103.3: Top 40.

WHOG came on the air after I left. I believe 103.3 did as well.

When it was first put on the air by its original ownership, 103.3 played a satelite-fed country format.

Why does 103.3 the vybe transmit at 3 thousand watts and have like a 300 foot tower ? i would think since they are the only top 40 in daytona they could juice up a lil bit more

It really doesn't work like that. Maybe in Europe, where formats are logged by the country's communication agency. But here in America, just because you're the only top 40/rock/talk station in the market doesn't mean anything to the FCC...they don't keep track of formats (and one of the only agencies in the world that doesn't)

So, why can't 103.3 become a 100,000 watt flame thrower? WLOQ is only 50 miles down the road on 103.1. You put much more power on 103.3 than you have already, and people in places like Deltona, which would get bad interference from the two stations being so close to one another. This is not mentioning 103.7 in Vero Beach and Gainesville as well as 103.5 in Tampa

There is a possiblity they could upgrade to 6,000 watts with a very heavy null to the SW to protect 103.1, but that would really defeat the purpose. It would cost tens of thousands of dollars to upgrade for an extra three miles or so of coverage, and most of that would be lost to the SW null anyway.

Anyway, I need to get out of my hotel room and get back out on the street and drink some more. Hooray for St. Patricks Day in Savannah!!!

And let's recall 95.7 WTSN, The Sun, All Seventies! This was around 1996 was it? I'll have to check the aircheck tapes. This was the format before WHOG-FM. NOt that they'll call it WHOG-*FM*. WHOG predate the station by many years on 1120 in Hobson City - Anniston, AL (Urban). Mark Hogan there gave the nod for them to use the call sign on the FM side (a friend o' mine).

Actually, 93.1 was originally on the air in 93-94 as oldies WEDG, "Gold 93.1". They switched to alternative WKRO when Black Crow broadcasting bought it. I believe this was Black Crow's first station in broadcasting.

WTSN, Sun 95.7 was launched by the then owners of WNDB. However, it eventually turned into WNDB-FM, and when Black Crow bought it, WHOG.

98.1 was ruined when Clear Channel aquired it amist one of that companies many mergers and aquisitions. It was then sold off to Mega to adhere to ownership rules in central Florida

99.9 was originally top 40 I-100 in the early 90's. I loved that station. Monster signal and always the station to listen to whether you were in St. Augustine or in Daytona on Spring Break. Eventually morphed into rock A/C "The New 99.9" and CHR "99.9 Kiss-FM". Crash (now of WJRR), Lou Valentino, and Cadillac Jack are personalities I remember from back then. The old studio and offices in Ormond Beach holds lots of memories and stories. It was a sad day when 99.9 was downgraded and moved to Jax.

103.3 was originally WDXD, "Dixie 103". That didn't last long as once again Black Crow aquired the signal and it's been either "Vibe" or "V" ever since.

94.5, 101.9, 105.9, and 107.7... which are historically strong ratings performers in Daytona, have long since blown off that market as viable. However, when 105.9 was "Cool", there was actually a sales staff that worked Daytona. Those days are LONG GONE.

I remember that well! Thanks for the memories. I knew Johnny B of I-100, he would turn his studio monitor to MY show when he was on the air! He really wanted to recruit some of my hosts - but they wouldn't have much to do with it. "Cool" used to play the 7 dwarf "Heigh - Ho" song at five PM, to let everybody know it was quitting time.

Heigh-Ho; yeah, I've got an aircheck of Cool 105.9 with the end of the workday schmeel on it.

Cadillac Jack, I have dinner with him every now and then. Great guy!
