dbx 286A

I just got a dbx 286A and wondering about setup. I have an AT3035 and an Alesis Multimix12 USB going into my CPA with not the best in sound cards yet. I have been recording into Audacity till I can do better. Without the 286A things sounded kinda muffled. Is the 286A going to help or just something else to clog up the audio chain? I will be using StationPlaylist and learning that too. Got the V/T down OK but getting the levels just right over the music has me stuck. I know this is a lot to throw out there but I'm trying to learn it all real fast.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Ben

Adjust your gain input to where you can hear some room noise... then back it down to where you can't.

I have my Input gain at +29

You're using a condenser so you'll need the Phantom power ON

Drive/Density - I have both set at 3.5.

De-Esser I have it turned Off (full left)

Enhancer - LF Detail at 2.5, HF Detail at 3

Threshold - -30

Ratio - 2:1

Output - 0

You can start with the above and tweak from there. The Enhancer, or EQ section, is personal preference and will have to do with your voice and mic.

If the muffled sound continues, play with mic location. Also, the distance between your mouth and your mic. The proximity effect (working mic close) can create something that you might call muffled. Also, what is close to your mic, behind it and beside it.

Put your mic on a long cord, walk around the room talking to it, walk into another room, or open a window and hold out the mic while to talk to it. Listening to this recording will help you know if mic placement is any part of your problem.

Thanks guys. That's a big help. Now I gotta get this hum out of my headphones. Seems to be tied into my CPU monitor. As I scroll through a page it changes. Damn, it's always something.
