DC/NOVA Rock Radio?

I'm relocating to the area from Chicago and DC101 doesn't quite cut it (I'm from Chicago and it reminds me of what Q101 was a poor hybrid of an active rocker and alt station) is it possible to pick up any stations from Baltimore or Philly on the radio in the car? I was just curious because I know Baltimore has a decent Indie rocker on one of their HD signals and Philly has two alt stations.

98 ROCK from Baltimore (97.9) is a great rock station. I agree that DC101 doesn't quite cut it. 98 Rock is a great station! It can usually be picked up in the car around the DC Beltway.

Depending on what part of the D.C area you are in, you may be able to listen to Baltimore. Philly is a no go however as its too far away. If you are on the Virginia side of the Potomac, you won't enjoy a lot of Baltimore regularly.

Good luck, as there isn't a great choice of rockers in the D.C. market.

Anything down in Fredericksburg? I'll be in the Bristow/Gainesville area and it sounds like anything from BAL will be a no go, anything else out there? BTW what's w/ all of the news stations on FM? I know it's the nations capital but I'm not a huger believer in multiple spoken word/talk stations on FM sure 1 or 2 works but more than that is over kill IMO.

From that area, you might pick up 96.9 in Fredericksburg. Its a Classic Rocker. Richmond would be a stretch at 100 miles or so away. 97.5 WWWV in Charlottesville may come in sometimes, but only to the South of there. Usually in that area its fighting with 97.5 in Martinsburg, WV.

Other than that, your market choices are going to be less than rockers.

If you are in Fredericksburg, 102.1 and 103.7 come in very well from Richmond. 103.7 plays a lot of 90's rock. Its AAA-lite!

Otherwise:

MD stations:

98 Rock: one of the last true AOR stations IMO.
100.7 the Bay
WRNR: Nationally recognized AAA station. Pretty adventurous. Good signal between DC and Ball'mer.
WTMD: AAA station in Baltimore that probably cant be heard across the Potomac in VA.
DC station:

88.5 HD-3: broadcasts a lot of 'XPN's feed from Philly

VA stations:

96.9: this does not really cover much of the market as its a Fredericksburg station and located 20 miles South of there.
97.7: even though this is a Southern MD station, it should be included as it has decent listenership down here.
97.5: 3WV is Charlottesville's other rocker. Great signal that goes all the way up to Warrenton no problem

Fredericksburg also has WYSK.com, which was the callsign and rock format on 99.3 before it flipped to rhythmic CHR a couple years ago.

WMDM 97.7 changed formats? Last I remember when I DXed it in the summer of 2010, it was a soft AC.

Also, would WYSK also be heard on 99.3-HD2?

They went to their current, Dial Global-voicetracked, classic rock format in Spring 2011.

99.3 has no HD. The signal is waaay down in Spotsylvania Co., so HD would be a tough go in downtown or north. 93.3 HD-2 is a simulcast of 99.3.

DC101 will certainly come in for you. And 98 Rock should be listenable, at least in the car. I listen to it all over NoVa in the car. I don't think you'll hear 3WV too often, w/ the 11,000 watt WLTF at 1,000 feet just 40 miles from you. But looking out THAT way, 105.5 The Bone is an option, however some a-hole put up a relay of 88.5's HD-2 bluegrass on that freq. somewhere in the vicinity of Great Falls (Great Falls is on the river just outside the beltway). Its not pumping many watts but it will definitly affect signal the closer you get to dc. The Fox 99 fm is another option, albiet samwhiched right in-between Hot 99.5 & the new/future all news WNEW(but WNEWs tower is on the opposite side of the dc metro from you). The 96.9 classic rock station at "King's Dominion" is out of the question, their signal gets obliterated as soon as you pass Fredricksburg by 97.1, not to mention the fact theres a country station on that freq just on the other side of the ridge from you in Strasburg. Gainsville is kinda out there, western edge of the dc metro I'd say, a good hour to hour&half commute to dc during rush hour (40 mins non rush hour). Your going to love to hate rush hour, an G'ville is just a traffic mess. You've got a Super Target though!!! and cheap gas!! ($3.18 last weekend when i was there).

WMDM is out of the question, they are on the other side of the dc metro from you.
100.7 The Bay, classic rock station can be an option, but it'll depend on where you are at the moment you listen......meaning if you move 2 feet, you'll get Q101 (CHR) Harrisonburg, move 2 more feet, you'll get "The Bay". Those 2 stations will be fighting with each other out there.

Good luck

WYSK is now WVBX according to Radio-Locator.

Ahh, the Vibe 99.3 F'burg. That won't make it out to Gainsville. i can sometimes get it in Clifton.........The Fox 99.3 WFQX should make it to Gainsville instead.

I forgot about the 99.3 The Fox. It was once the 99.3 The Frog with an alternative-leaning CHR before switching to classic rock. Before the IBOC, I've heard both 99.3's in the Fairfax city area with a highly selective FM tuner.
