I feel like Jason will get the nod. One thing I always thought about at how PGC used to sound more polished. I think Mike was getting it there but now a new PD with new ideas. I don't know but the constant PD changes could be a killer for that station. I thought Tigger would do ok in the mornings but the PPM are not working very well for him. I honestly don't know who locally can pull the numbers that could beat Russ Parr, Steve Harvey, Tom Joyner, or Kane. How does Tigger fare with the ladies as far as numbers? Are there any jocks in other states that may be able to come to DC and make some noise?
I would say bring back Olivia Fox since she has history in the DC area. However, she is in her early 40s, but would be a strong lead personality on her own. She was top 3 in mornings in Tampa Bay although she was an unknown when she first arrived in that market. The only reason why she was displaced was because CC was cheap and went with syndicated Steve Harvey instead live and local and suffered since then.
Well again the PPM has changed everything Olivia Foxx was top 3 in mornings in Tampa with the diary books not PPM. CBS has to decided what their goals are for WPGC the days of being number one in D.C. are over PPM ended that run. Stations that play any type of hip hop are not top 5 in PPM unless they sit alone like WERQ Baltimore with no direct competition. Big Tigger with Olivia Foxx would be good might be good but i really think that they are testing Free from 106 and park out to join Tigger in morning drive on WPGC. WPGC is still making a ton of money so CBS should stick with a CHR/Urban format and a PD and leave the station alone. Sam Rodgers might be a part of the problem as well.
Uh, CBS's urban contemporary (just like old WPGC) WVEE "V-103" in Atlanta is #1, a very crowded market with 5 other stations with a variety of the urban or rhythmic format (WHTA, WUMJ/WAMJ, WALR, WWVA/WWLG, WPZE), has been since PPM entered that market in January 2009. Stations that spins hip-hop can be in #1 in their market, but they have to know how to daypart it strategically and have strong personalities to back that up. I believe WPGC could be #2 (since WTOP will a tough cookie to be), but they have know how to take on all the other stations strategically (dayparting) and tackle them effectively.
Free maybe a good fit for the morning show, but if she is added then it should reflect with her name in marquee as well. WPGC has to improve on its female demographic retention tremendously or it will continue to lack behind WHUR and Majic. Those 2 stations could easily be surpassed if WPGC program to pull the 25-34 females back away from them during the middays and 10pm-midnight dayparts. Sister station, V-103 (Atlanta), pulls females from the other 5 stations by remaining R&B & gold-heavy during the middays and late night hours and wins all demos as a result. Dayparting is their winning formula.
Sam Rodgers has been there awhile as matter fact he was there when Jay Stevens was still there, so I don't know about that one...
I knew that you were going to go to one of the few cases where the PPM has had little affect on a station and that would be WVEE Atlanta who owns one of the strongest signals in the US at 100,000 watts that is why they have not been affected as much by PPM. WPGC has a 50,000 watt signal BIG difference. WVEE is well programmed iam not saying that you are wrong in what you said but that signal helps them as well. Look at WGCI Chicago,WQHT New York,WPGC Washington,WUSL Philly, PPM has them all down so V Atlanta is not the norm. Again Washinton,DC and Atlanta are two different markets i live in the DC region i know the market well certain things that work other places does not work in DC or Baltimore for whatever reason. On a national scale UAC has done better than Hip-Hop stations PPM has not affected them as much at all i just ran down a list of former top rated stations that are no longer that because of PPM. Again i live in the DC region ask Dave Hughes he will tell you that Sam Rodgers has run CBS Radio DC into the ground ask DC media people and i do not have anything against Mr Rodgers i could care less about him but people who live in the area say this about him they would know.
No offense, but the signal watt is irrelevant. Both stations cover the core counties and jurisdictions apart of their radio market area with full power signals.
Programming is the reason why all those other stations fell from grace. UACs have done better because it attracts and maintains the attention of 25-34 audience throughout the day (TSL). The stations that have realized this have adjusted and bounced back quickly. The stations that were targeting 12-24 year old instead fell off like a brick (that is most hip-hop-leaning urban stations). See K-104 in DFW as an example of a station that has been trending downward since the PPM.
On V-103, it's not an anomaly at all. If you had listened to them during the period of 2006-2008, you would understand why they were #2 or #3 in the Atlanta market because it became very sloppy. Actually, PPM made them get their sh*t together quickly as well hence why it so heavily dayparted and expanded it song choices significantly.
I've spent quite a bit of time of the years in DC, Chicago, DFW, Detroit, SF Bay Area, and couple other places and is somewhat familiar with the local musical scenes of each. However, most of those aforementioned stations were doing their own thing under diary. However, WPGC seemed to always been the exception, and truly reflected the Go-Go, live band oriented music scene of DC area. WPGC was also the only one of those mentioned that actually saw changes in management at the time of implementation of the PPM. Remember Jay Stevens leaving in January 2007 for Radio One, the same month that PPM introduced to the market? All those other stations were weak in programming prior to PPM, and nothing about them even remotely impressed me at all. WGCI was alright, but it was even out of touch with it audience in Chicago thanks to former OM/PD Elroy Smith.
You might be right about Sam Rodgers and reputation, but honestly it is up to the individual PD to handle day to day operations of the station. Jason Kidd will have to do his damn thing in the interim, and I believe he will.
