That's Dutch for Rock Lives Here, but not for HJY at the High Times Cannabis Cup this year. It's 11/20-11/24 in Amsterdam & HJY has been sponsoring a trip & live broadcast for 10 years now but this year I notice Charles will be there for New Years instead broadcasting at the Siberia Coffee Shop...not that New Year's Eve in Amsterdam is any less of a hoot anyway. If I'm not mistaken, the festivities are always held Thanksgiving week & I'm wondering if over the years, the number of listeners willing to be away from home that week has dwindled.

By the way, "waar John?" is Dutch for "where's John?"

John went to WBOS

<>> Hey Runnrigger, High Times Cannabis huh.
One of my best friends was decapitated in a car accident several years ago . My friend Wayne. He`d 'smoked' alot that ill fated night. He was a really good person who was caught up in 'Rock' and 'Pot' . Why does rock have to be promoted WITH Pot???!!! People talk about the shameless Tobacco companies. Aren`t WE shameless at Rock stations for what we do with promoting Pot? But thats wicked COOL ,Right? Good time Geoff Charlie is about as bad as it gets. I am sickened by people who promote drugs. Wayne was one great young man destroyed by Pots effects. There are others I know whos lives have been really damaged by it. New Years and Rock and Roll - Great! Drugs- just Sucks. I`d like to see HJY not do this. I feel sorry for the kids..

It's unfortunate about your friend but HJY doesn't exactly target impressionable teenagers and people who have the money to shell out for the trip whether it's for some hempfest or New Years Eve are adults with the capacity to make their own decisions.I do wonder if they moved the trip to New Years was prompted by a decision not to promote the event on the part of HJY or the travel agency handling it but the station isn't promoting use of anything. It's giving people an opportunity to take part in something they are inclined to take part in anyway.Amsterdam is there whether HJY is or not.

People that think like that man. Wow, really COOL! Wicked Cool! I feel sorry for you. I feel sorry for the kids.
I don`t mean to come down so hard on you, your`e a hot s--t poster. This just has to stop. I hope you NEVER have to deal with what Pot really does.

By that same token, should rock stations refrain from doing promos with beer companies/bars? Different substance, same logic. Sorry to hear what happened to your friend.
Edited by The Viking on 10/03/05 09:26 PM.

Nobody's advocating anything. It's all about people who dump responsibility onto radio, movies,tv,etc. Bad things happen to good people but stop saying rock radio or rock music is driving them to anything. HJY isn't promoting anybody do anything they don't want to. As far as saying it's rock rock rock I say:
If you wanna go and get high wit me
Smoke a L in the back of the Benz-y
Oh why must I feel this way? (Hey, must be the money!)
That's Nelly by the way even though most stations edited it
And chr or urban stations have younger audiences than HJY or any mainstream rocker.

Agreed, alcohol is far more harmful than Pot in the long run. . .

But that's anouther topic - here the topic is about personal responsibility. I don't thin HJY is forcing anyone to smoke pot or go on the trip. Hell, in many ways this is no different than Paul and Al's Trips to Miami.

What people do on these trips is their responsibility - not the radio stations. There is plenty of education on why Pot, Alcohol, and other vices are bad for you - it's not hard to get. If people ignore the education that is out there - it's their fault for suffering any concequences - I think it's about time that people start taking responsibility for themselves rather than trying to lay the blame on others.

HJY is not forcing anyone to smoke a joint. . .

Whats the use. How do you feel like it.
Tha High Times CANNABIS CUP.
Thats what HJY is promoting. Geoff (Good Time) Charlie is going to Amsterdam. Geoff speaks on HJY and HJJ that he thinks doing drugs is great ,cool, boardens your mind. HJY is not 'Forcing' anyone. NO ONE SAID THAT.
They ARE promoting it. Go sell your 'SLANT' to someone else.
Their kids.
THEIR KIDS...

And then where are their parents in all of this? If you don't want your kids listening to these messages - have them turn the channel. My mom and dad never let me watch or listen to things that they thought were offensive or "bad" when I was a kid (and that was before the V-chip and parential controls on the internet!)

HJY targets the 18-34 year old male market - not kids. And I think an 18 year old knows the consequences of using drugs.

Hell, my 10 year old niece knows the consequences of drugs - she know's what Pot is and what it can do to people - she (because she was sat down by her parents) knows that if she gets involved with drugs and alcohol - bad things will happen.

And also - just for the record - Pot is not as deadly as Beer, ciggerettes, and fatty foods. It's also not a "gateway" drug as the government would like people to believe. Is pot dangerious - yep - it can be - especially if one is driving a car or operating machinery when high, but for the most part - it's not as bad as many "legal" subsatances.

Unfortunately the real issue here is that many parents don't sit down and talk with their kids anymore to discuss these things. It's not the radio-station' responsibility to teach these kids - it's the parent's responsibility - and most parents are falling short of that responsibility.

For the record, I was raised in a strict household, where my parents knew of pretty much everything I did (or found out about it in due time) - if I screwed up - I was punished. I was thought right from wrong by my parents and older brothers (whom paved the way by screwing up first and then getting punished, so I learned from their mistakes as well). As much as I hated it back then - I realize now that my parents weren't trying to be my friend - but they were trying to be my parents - and I thank them for being that strict now.

Alot oh kids don`t have two parents.
Pot is a drug that turns people into useless fools.
18 to 30 years old- 18 ,19, 20, -14 ,15, 16. ,,,,,Yea they are our kids.
you believe that Pot isn`t so bad. Really? Thats so the "legalize Hemp" crowd.
There is really no sense in posting to you. Maybe your 'nickname' explains it all.

First off - nickname comes from my last name - DesRoches (which is pronounced De-Roach). So - your cheap shot at my nickname is way off base.

2ed, I have never used pot, and never will - it's not my thing. I hardly drink as well. But I have no problems with people that want to smoke pot, drink (as long as they don't drive) or do anything else to their bodys - that is their decision. They should know the concequences of their actions and not cry to me if something goes wrong in their life.

If YOU actually DO some research into Pot, you'll realize that it was legal in the US for many many years (until the 1930s), and it was mainly due to politics (Hemp was hurting the synthetic fiber and plastics industries) - that it was banned in the US - insaine properganda movies such as "Refer Madness" also helped to get hemp and pot banned in the 30s. As I have stated before - Pot kills far LESS people than Alcohol, Ciggeretts, and McDonnalds.

No pot smoker that I have EVER met has been violent when high, though I have met many alcolholics that are very violent when drunk. While I think driving while high is as deadly as driving while drunk, as long as that person is not harming anyone else - let them do to their body what they want to do to it.

As for leagelizing Hemp - I could really care less, as it would not affect me. But seeing that Pot/Hemp, etc is so easy to grow in almost any climate, and due to the fact that it has been illegial for over 70 years in the US but is STILL widely available to the public - I really don't think that leagalizing it would be too much of a major impact on society.

As for the kids that don't have two parents - well I feel for them - but still - that one Parent has the responsibility to teach their kids that drugs are bad and should be avoided. (or better yet - educate them about the drugs and not just the overall statement that "Drugs are bad" - explain WHY they are bad and what the side-effects of them are).

It doesn't take much effort for a parent to be involved in their kids lives and to teach their kids stuff like that. Unfortunitly, when it comes to "sensitive" issues such as sex and drugs - many parent don't want to take that responsiility - and the kid is left to find out what these things are all about on their own.

Parenting is not a radio-stations job - it's the job of parents. Radio and the media are not suppose to hand-hold people and "guide" them down one path. Radio and media is suppose to spread different and conflicting ideas around, and have people educate themselves on the issue and make up their own minds - Not to tell what people should and should not do.

As for those 'useless fool' pot smokers - I nominate Bill Clinton, George W Bush, George Carlin, Willie Nelson, and Bill Gates - all of whom have either admitted to smoking pot, or have got arrested for doing so. I think those listed have done preaty well with their lives - so don't sterotype.

Bill Cliton ,George Bush, Willie Nelson I rest my case.
Einstien, Tellor, Divinci, The Astronouts didn`t.
Youre defending Pot.
What a disgrace.

I'm not defending anyone - it's you that have no evidence to back up your case. You have sterotyped all pot-users into one catigory - when in reality (IF you do some research) many people whom have admitted using pot are far MORE sucessful than you and I are (Clinton, Bush, and Gates are/were the most powerful people on the planet and obviously did something right to get where they are now). Hell George Washington and Thomas Jefferson GREW the stuff (and probibly used it) for sale in their own plantations - and they are the founders of a now 229 year old country!

I'm not saying Pot is good, nor am I saying that it is the evil thing that you seem to be making it out to be (with no hard evidence to support your claim). The fact is that ciggerettes, beer, and hamburgers from Mcdonnalds kill FAR more people in a year that Pot does. For one, you cannot Overdose on Pot - and the only Major health problems in Pot are an increase in Tar which will raise your risk of lung cancer (and it does kill brain-cells - but not enough to kill you on it's own). Do the research and find out for yourself - their are plenty of medical studies out now that go into the side-effects of Pot, especially now because of the debate over medical marijuanna. The data is all there, both good and bad - read some of it and then make up your own mind on the subject.

All I am saying in this arguement is that the decision to smoke pot should be a personal one - and not one forced on you by anyone. The educational material is freely available, and parents should teach their kids about drugs and other vices - thus I have NO sympathy for someone who decides to smoke pot and lose their job, or get arrested for it, or have other bad things happen to them because of it.

BUT at the same time - it's not bothering me personally, and not costing me anything - so why should I care? If people want to devote their lives to smoking pot, gambling, playing video games, or going to church every day - well then that's their decision - and who made you or me "god" to tell them differently???

Back on topic, reguardless of what HJY does or doesn't do - people are still going to smoke pot. Having a trip to Holland is not going to affect anyone's decision to smoke or not smoke Pot. The people that go either have been smoking for awhile now, or just go for the fun of going somewhere different in the world (it is a preaty country). We have seen over the past 70+ years that the law has not really done anything to slow the useage of this product down at ALL - people are going to do what they want to do and as long as their not hurting anyone else - why not let them?

People need to start taking RESPONSIBILITY for their OWN ACTIONS instead of blaming other people for their mistakes in life. The educational material concerning Pot and other drugs is emmence and FREELY available - thus if someone want to do it in the face of all of the education available to them - then that's their issue - and when things go bad for them - it's their own fault.

Please - Next time when you post, post some evidence that you have a clue of what your talking about - instead of just talking out of ignorance and trying to bad-mouth me for actually having some knowledge and education on the subject.

You're better off not even responding to this guy Roach. He uses the boards as platforms for subjects other than radio and won't quit. Everything he reads here upsets him and everything he hears on talk shows upsets him. The thread was about a station promotion and not pot itself. HJY isn't doing the trip in November so maybe they don't want to be affiliated with the festival. You're right. It's no different than P&A's Miami trip. You take responsibility for your own actions. You may as well end this because the addict is an energizer bunny whose opinions I respect like anyone else's but he needs a platform and this shouldn't be it.

Yea end it Roach.
Vera honey listen, Rock music is entertainment . Pot is an ILLEGAL DRUG.
WHJY has a self admitted drug user (Geoff Charlie) going to Amsterdam. The HIGH TIMES CANNABIS CUP. WHJY is promoting Rock with Drugs. It hurts KIDS. It (POT) has killed kids.Roach starts talking about the virtues of Pot. Our Radio Industry is tarnished by the Abby Hoffman attitude we as radio take on drugs.
Say what you want about me, thats fine. I`ll be the unenlightened drag who hates what Pot is and does.
You enlightened ones continue to condone it.

No one is condoneing it - obviously YOUR on something because you obviously can't read!

All we are saying is that People need to do RESEARCH on topics before they start talking out of their @sses about something that they know NOTHING about.

Education is Key - Knowledge is power. Once you have that education and knowledge about a particular subject - (such as Pot) - then you can decide if it's right for you - or something that you stay away from.

This is my last post on this topic - I have said everything I want to say and can't combat pure ignorance on the subject matter. . .
