Those are really good songs, but whoever was in charge of writing this (possibly automation) screwed up the list!

Sad, huh? I remember reading, maybe in the BGlobe, that there were five (maybe six?) studios built in that building, all identical to each other. There was one for each of their five stations, and any of the five on any given day could operate from any one of the five. I was impressed by that. Not quite sure if that remained true when they operated 96.9 WTKK, but it was supposedly still a nice operation.

It's been 10+ years since I've been in the building, but originally there was a row of 6 studios along the back of the building facing the skyline (and the Star Market) -- east to west -- a spare studio for a future addition, 96.9 WSJZ, 92.9 WBOS, 99.5 WKLB, 106.7 WMJX, and 105.7 WROR (slightly bigger than the others to support the Loren & Wally cast). Midway through 96.9's talk format, the 96.9 studio and the spare studio space were merged and re-worked to create a true talk radio control room and air studio.

Since then, a former live performance space for WBOS in the front of the building was converted into the home of 98.5. Maybe WRCA got the old 106.7 space? Surely someone has been in there more recently than me.

Beasley to Waltham--ironically that's where 102.5 is licensed (as is WRCA 1330) --the former WCRB
WRCA 1330 is no longer licensed to Waltham, when the transmitter was moved from Waltham to Newton in 2007 (on the five tower array in Oak Hill with 1200 WXKS and 1600 WUNR), the COL for WRCA was changed from Waltham to Watertown.

The WRCA Newton transmitter has a directional null toward Waltham especially at night, and I’m guessing it no longer met FCC signal strength requirements to keep the Waltham COL.

Time does fly and I must have missed the announcement of the lease last Sept.

By the way...on WBZ Morgan White Jr show cut to two hours.Actual Facebook comment by a fan:"WBZ’s ratings will drop significantly due to Morgan’s on air cut!" Right. A late night Sat. show losing an hour to an informercial...that will surely
gut WBZ's ratings.
Wasn't aware of the COL change...and that was awhile ago.

his fan club could probably pool all the change under their couch cushions and buy that hour back for him.

How much could they be getting for that hour?

Well, for that particular hour the ratings are surely to drop, and it won't help the subsequent two hours any.

WRCA is currently managed by Bloomberg and their studios are part of Bloomberg's Boston bureau which is located on the 28th floor of 100 Summer St in downtown Boston.

Surely there’s equipment on hand at Morrissey Blvd to control 1330/106.1, should the LMA fall through or Bloomberg be found airing crude content on Beasley’s license (other than oil futures). But it could very well just be sitting in a coat closet.

I'm sure the EAS equipment isn't at Bloomberg's studio, that is too important to trust to an entity that is leasing your AM and translator.

So Bloomberg sends their programming to Beasley who feeds it thru an airchain that includes a EAS encoder or encoders to run tests and capture the air chain for tests and alerts, and that is then sent to the the AM and the translator IIRC must pick up the AM OTA

Bloomberg also has to feed their AM in Newburyport and the second 106.1 translator up in Amesbury or close to it somewhere. Since they own those licenses they are responsible for the EAS compliance.

Beasley could handle their end with a PC to run the automation, 99% will be to pass thru the stuff Bloomberg sends them, the EAS gear, etc.

If I were Beasley I'd want silence sensors and an alt feed too

I don't think there is any original content from Beasley.... even public affairs but I could be wrong so correct me if I am

When I was at MRBI, there was very little content created in the studios when I was there.

Everything on WAZN came from somewhere else via a stream on a PC or a Comrex device fed by a Telco line.

WLYN had some in studio stuff, but most of it was fed by the dolla a holla crowd from the basement of their church and fed via Comrex... we had a bunch of them in the rack tied into a switcher that was controlled by an ancient DOS automation system.

But both stations could be run with 2 racks of equipment

I'm sure WRCA and the 106.1 translator can be run in half a rack in a closet.

Where I live, in the Greater Lawrence area, I'm too far to get a clean signal from EITHER 106.1 antenna. Yes, there are locations where the signals don't overlap or interfere and, dang, if it don't sound good on FM! But most of the top the FM capture effect is selecting one or the other as I drive around, and, wouldn't you know it, one of the feeds is delayed by about a half-second with respect to the other. Maddening. And with the 1330 antennas and the low-power of the AM transmitter, it's difficult to get good reception on AM.

Oooh, oooh, wait - I'm supposed to use the app, right? So, what, just dang these two FM translator jokes and the weak AM signal?

Wow did Bloomberg miss your market. 🤬🤬They did a poor job of spacing out their translators by basically overlapping 92.1 with 106.1, and then having the weird 106.1 setup.

Do you have an HD radio? Bloomberg should be good on 92.9 KBOS HD2 whilst in Lawerence. https://www.rabbitears.info/contour.php?appid=6a0acfbc035a4b79898cc1b6063ebeb7&map=Y

How is 1330 AM when driving around versus inside your house? It should be listenable, even if it veers into fringe territory at times. Also, it's weird that they have 1450 as well. Absolutely odd.

Interesting about that capture effect. It makes single-frequency networks a hassle, as well as FM boosters. There is technology that has been tested out these last few years to make this situation better (I hear WKVB is going to try this new system), but you shouldn't have to put up with that. Interestingly enough, you can actually do seamless boosters on AM without as much of that nasty cancellation.

You shouldn't be forced to stream because Bloomberg has a mess of signals or you don't live 'close enough' to Boston. It sounds like the mess that OTA TV people have to put up withx like myself. Sometimes they'll plop down poor signals so you are tempted to switch to Hulu, or whatnot.

I wish you the best of luck, and again, try 92.9 HD2.

but that 106.1 translator has to null to prevent any interference with WCOD ... over open water it could get to WCOD's protected contour.

It is also nulled to the west to protect 106.3 WFNQ , especially when the 106.3 stick was in Hudson NH

the 92.1 translator in Topsfield fills in to the big money areas where they really want to be.... places like Beverly Farms

When Beasley put the 106.1 on I could get it in Dracut easily.

I have not checked it lately.

I don't mean to snap at you, boredop, because you've been pleasant, but, to me, an outsider, there seems to be too damned many FM translators and LPFM stations at the moment. and I'm sure someone is going to jump down my throat for this, but are any of these stations actually performing a useful service to more than a handful of listeners and/or taking in significant revenue? Is AM radio being "saved" by any of these? Every one of these signal-challenged operations has to protect somebody somewhere. What was the FCC thinking?

The FCC was looking for a solution for dying AMs. In many cases the translators have saved small and medium market AMs, particularly daytimers. Overall, most of them have either the advantage of being fulltime alternatives for daytimers or actually covering more than a low power AM... such as the roughly 1000 AMs on the former Class IV channels of 1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450 and 1490.

So, for at least half of all AMs, a translator is a salvation.
