DEAD BOARD--POST THOUGHTS

I think the boards are a little dead because the main page of Radio-Info.com is coming up as a default error page. Not everybody uses the direct link to the boards.

I have no skin in the Journey moment or oldies. I am a news fan. So, with that, I will now turn this thread back to it's regularly scheduled program.

Let's recap...

1) Dave FM is flipping to sports/talk...sometime in September but no date yet.
2) CC is doing something--possibly including a signal switcheroo, the promotion of Wild to a full intown signal, and the demise of Patron--but nobody knows exactly what or when.
3) Nobody knows what Cumulus's plan is for Rock100.5 (or 99X, or Journey for that matter), but figures something must be up because of the ratings. I am not sure if Cumulus knows its plan, either.
4) South 107 is moving in in the next year or two, which may have some impact on the ATL (intown) country duopoly.
5) There is still no 1960s or 1970s pop on ATL radio.

Brent, you will NEVER...repeat NEVER have an oldies format in Atlanta again simply because all the people who want to hear it are either dead, dying or just don't care. Radio operators know this. Record companies know this. Most of the artists know this. What was once a vibrant and viable format is now done. Atlanta likes Urban, CHR, Urban CHR, Talk, News and sports. Anything else simply doesn't fly here because nobody...NOBODY wants anything else. Dave failed. 97.1 isn't worth considering as an oldies station. Journey is close to a format flip...(Just a guess, here) and if not, they should be. Radio isn't what it used to be. It's in the past. The way the business is operated now is nothing like it used to be and will never be that way again. I stay in radio because I love what radio can now become...if people embrace the technology that almost killed it to begin with. There is a lot of stuff out there to help radio but over-the-air, know your DJ as your best friend who always plays the best music radio is dead. I, personally would love an oldies format but, frankly, knowing what I know, it will not happen in this town.

OK, Let's try this imaginary sitaution. If Docket 80-90 & Deregulation HAD NOT occured, what would the Atlanta FM Dialscape look like today (frequency & format)
92.9-Rock
94.1-CHR
94.9-A/C
96.1-Rock
98.5-News/Talk
99.7-CHR
101.5-Country
102.3-Regional Mexican
103.3-Urban Contemporary
105.5-Country

I thought 105.5 was a "move in" 80 90 style IRRC they were a class A FM (3 KW @ 300 feet). I do not remember 105.5 getting south of 285. But the point of very few (8) market covering FM signals is correct.

Well then what is Journey going to flip to????

While I would HOPE it would flip to an All Polka format, I actually expect they will simulcast one of the Dickey sports stations. They recognize that it is just a translator signal so they have to be very strategic about it. I would think it may become a testing ground for new format ideas. That would be interesting.

Remember, it's about making money, NOT serving the public interest, entertaining people or informing the public. All good and well-meaning intentions aside, if you have a particular format you want to hear, there are plenty of places on the internet for creating your own. Radio is an ADVERTISING MEDIUM. If CC, Cumulus, Radio One, Cox or any other company could make money simply by running ads 24/7, they would do it.

This thread could end up in the dictionary as an example of dysfunctional conversation. I look at the original post that kicked it off and I am not sure whether the writer is concerned because the FORUM is dead, or is concerned that RADIO is dead in Atlanta. And from there it goes downhill until the wheels fall off the wagon.

I do not buy a radio because I am concerned that the owners of radio stations need to make money. I buy a radio because I want "my ears to be happy". And I don't want to have to be sitting at the computer to have happy ears. The radio follows me into the yard when I go out and hand-pick the crab grass. The radio follows me into the garage when I do a bit of woodwork. The radio follows me when I trundle down to country road in search of a grocery store.

Long term, if broadcasters do not worry about happy ears... will there be "the making of money"?

Currently the money goes to the stations who having ratings to prove there are ears out there.... but the ratings count ears, and do not evaluate the happiness of ears. The industry began with a bargain: you do the information and the service and entertainment and we (the collective public) will give you a franchise to the conduit that reaches the ears.

If I take what I have quoted from your post... then I assume the industry has decided that it no longer wants to honor the terms of the franchise. What happens when "the collective public" decides the franchise is no longer working and should be revoked?

I am the guilty starter, and yes, my ears are not happy in this market. I might as well be deaf.

Well, yes and no. While making money is obviously the main goal of radio companies, the FCC still states that stations must serve the public interest. The airwaves are owned by the public and licensed to broadcasters. Of course, you would never know that from the effects of deregulation.

This Brent Guy is Stuck on the Oldies Format !
Talk about living in the past...
I hope CC puts Wild 105.7/967 on 96.1 that would be great for them!

The best music that will ever be made..................... 8) 8)

Here is my point.......
As long as there is such a thing as "Indie Rock Radio", so obscure that only a few college kids know what it is, there is a need for Classic Hits in Atlanta.

Think about it that way, and your opinion might change.
