"Deal or Not to Deal"

N

I noticed that CNBC is airing this show all week at 8pm ET. I've become pretty addicted to this show (yeah, the hott girls help, too LOL). The only thing that needs work is Howie Mandel's cliche hand-offs for a commercial break.

CNBC is also airing promos that following the Olympics, there will be new episodes airing each weeknight at 8pm ET for one week only. I certainly hope

NBC doesn't pull an ABC and burn it out as quickly as it grew, like "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" did.

I certainly hope NBC does with this show like they did during the summer with "Baby Hit Me One More Time": keep it as a novelty -- making people want more.

NBC has said it will be a one-week stunt, then back once a week only on Mondays. While I still disagree with making it a weekly series, it may help prevent the fast burnout (and I love the show, so I'm not suggesting it shouldn't be back in some form).

The fact that they're already looking at a syndicated daily version is almost comical. Yes, it had a strong debut, but we have yet to see how it stacks up against tougher competition from the other networks. I just don't see it being sustainable 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Millionaire--absolutely...it's a well-done trivia contest people can test their knowledge against without it burning out.

"Who Would Like To Be a Millionaire?"

You guys are referring to "Deal or No Deal," right?

I like the name change though! It inspired me:

"An Investigation involving a Crime Scene"

"Housewives Showing Some Desperation"

"A Group of Stranded Plane Crash Survivors who are Lost"

"The First Name Given to Me at Birth is Earl"

Canceled or not Canceled?

I give this show about 3 weeks, maybe a month, before the DVCs end up on a shelf next to Dick Clark's "21" Martha's Apprentice and Who wants to be a Hilton....

NBC should handle this show like they did "TV's Bloopers & Practical Jokes" before it became a regular series back in the early to mid-1980s. That is to air it ONCE during the Sweeps and AS NEEDED on a FILL-IN basis only.

Anyone have a copy of "Millionaire's" current average ratings?

> Millionaire--absolutely...it's a well-done trivia contest

Well...It obviously DIDN'T work out as a 5 day a week thing or ABC probably would STILL be doing today.

If "Deal" is gonna have ANY chance at all, NBC will have to use it like they did "Bloopers & Practical Jokes" back in the '80s. Otherwise, I say send it packing to Daytime (God knows NBC Daytime could use the boost).

Better idea - Create a daytime version, but DO NOT syndicate it. Instead keep BOTH the Daytime AND Prime Time versions on NBC. This will give the show a regular following WITHOUT driving it into overkill. Plus, it'll give their soaps a ratings boost.

Sounds contradictory I know, BUT....

Thoughts?

Cheers :)

Super Millionaire

As a die hard fan of tv game shows, I believe there's room for more Super Millionaire as filler, at the very least.

As for Deal or no deal, I hope the show continues to do well. I agree though, it shouldn't be every day. Just an hour long once a week.

How well would reality tv do if it were every day?
Would Fear factor do well? Doubt it.
______________

Not handy, but I subscribe to Marc Berman's newsletter, and it regularly reports growth, year over year.

Not at all. Working in daytime and working in primetime are not the same thing. It most certainly is working on a five day a week basis. No, it's not Jeopardy, Wheel or Oprah, but being run primarily as a daytime--not access--strip, it has solid ratings.

NBC still has a daytime lineup? :)

Sounds like an excellent idea, but I imagine getting the NBC affiliates to give up the time would be next to impossible.

AGREED! Why ABC thought running it at 10 pm would work is beyond me. 8 or 9 is another story.

Thankfully, it's tanking now on a once a week basis.

I'd LOVE to see Super Millionaire return to ABC! Those shows in 2004 were so exciting, especially since the jackpot is $10,000,000. If I remember correctly, the network won that time slot, but I agree that it should be on earlier. Little doses of Millionaire here and there are much better than jamming it down everyone's throats, which is why the original version got cancelled and went into syndication with a new host.

"21"

That was anchored...um, hosted by Maury Povich, if we're talking about the 2000 version.

Having him host a family-friendly game show was just wrong. Especially a game show that was still fresh in viewers' minds from the "Quiz Show" movie and the scandal in the 50s.
______________

I find "Deal" to be terribly boring. There is no skill or knowledge involved (even though they try to make it look like there is). It's like watching someone else play the lottery. It's all just chance. At least with Millionaire you could play along and test your own knowledge.

Actually, the 5 day a week "Fear Factor" re-runs score really high both on individual stations and on FX.
