Dean Close Dies

For those of you old enough to remember him, it is my sad task to inform you that former Rochester broadcaster Dean Close died last Friday at the age of 81.

Dean came from Pennsylvania, and worked at radio stations in Hornell, Buffalo, and Rochester. He was also employed at WROC TV as a newsman.

I met Dean while working briefly at WSAY when Lou Dickey Sr. purchased the station and later at WNYR/WEZO.

Dean had been ill for many years and finally passed away from a stroke.

Sad to hear about this. Dean was a talented guy, a class act. Many people will probably remember him best from his years at WKBW, but he also distinguished himself as a reporter and anchor at WROC-TV and later as news director at WSAY during the years 1981-83 when it gave WHAM a run for its money.

Broadcasting misses men of his caliber.

The subject of Dean Close came up at the recent Rochester Radio Reunion. I had been asking if anyone knew anything concerning his whereabouts. Dean was my Newsman for a couple of years while I did the Morning Drive show at WKLX in the late 1980's. Even back then he was not that well physically. He was however a well respected professional in the business, and will surely be missed. Thanks for posting the update about Dean. RIP
