Dear Jamz, Power, Kiss, et al.,

Dear Jamz, Power, Kiss, et al.,

This holiday season, emotions are running pretty high. It’s no different here on Radio-Info, and it shows; people taking personal offense to statements being made, the lack of respect being shown for others, and the somewhat-egotistical statements that have recently been said. Not by all, but some. We also nearly have a full page of message board threads all on the same topic, and all are repetitive because of it.

Pardon my pep-talk, but…

In this economy, each and every one of you should be thankful to have a job in radio, instead of bickering to colleagues. There are so many others who’d love to be where you are right now. We’ve all seen a mass of firings all year long, and both loved radio employees and Valley stations go away. Most recently, we’ve seen stations maneuvering themselves by format and image in preparation for PPM.

PPM: Now, that’s probably the biggest news for Phoenix radio in a while! PPM certainly shouldn’t be news anymore, and having the right format and image by the time PPM arrives in Phoenix is only the beginning.

Are we going to be seeing big upsets in the future PPM results? That’s likely what the status quo will bring. How about a victory for the “underdogs”? Will Jamz, Power, and Kiss actually appear closer in the results than what would have been imagined? Keep in mind, these are all possible.

Playing the type of music that you do, for the kind of listeners you have, the time is perfect.

So, now here’s the chance…

Which of the three have the programmers and other staff members motivated enough to focus these high emotions and loyalty of their station that we see on this message board, and put out the best radio we’ve heard in a long time in 2009?

Who wants to be the one to program a perfectly structured format of playing the hits—but not let the limited choice of simply this very day’s hits stop you at just that. Lots of creativity could be done with this. Will we get to hear the return of enjoyable, real “personality”, that can relate to a majority of the listeners? Will listeners more than ever feel involved with what your station does, and where they will see you involved in the community?

It’s radio to keep your listeners listening for more.

It’s radio to make the Phoenix market listener go through a commercial break to get their favorite music, more content, and info/entertainment that their iPod or Sirius/XM cannot provide. Rather, who dares to actually utilize today’s technology in favor of your terrestrial radio station?

The overall question is, who wants to show their competition up the most, outside of the message boards and onto the air-- to “blast the competition out of the water”, respectfully and professionally?

When that happens, I suppose the future calibre of posts will change. After all, everyone from the program director, to the part-time promotions assistant, represent their station with what they say and how they say it.

There are so much more to focus on in preparation for the future than what people say on a message board. One thing that nobody should forget, is that as fellow radio industry professionals, you’re all on the same team.

That’s team Terrestrial Radio, and you’ve got some of the newest and growing competitors.

Now go win one for the team: gain more of the younger generation, and distinguish your station from all other in-market competition.

Very well said Lauren. As a long time reader of these forums and not-so-much poster, I too have seen the conversation change from the informative and sometimes hilarious threads about KAZG "Lumberyard 1440" to these new threads... starting with Kid and Ruben's dismissal and agitated by Energy's flip... about Arizona's big three in the Rhythmic CHR market doing battle with one another. Except in this case, there is no constructive criticism.

I can tell you first hand (unlike many others on this board who still feel the need to comment) that life in the 4745 N 7th building is kinda funky. However it isn't the war zone that some here like to describe... it definitely is a business environment. Here's an example... I'm not afraid to take the elevators, and thanks to this board many of the other, and probably more well known, CBS employees have decided to skip our one-story-staircase exercise/shortcut and take the elevators as well.

To add on to Laurens thoughts however, I do feel that two or three or maybe even more of our new (and very vocal for that matter) members may work for one station or another, and are probably attempting to swing the feelings of those readers of this board who DO NOT work in the industry and don't know any better.

In the end, everyone with enough knowledge to even find this forum should know that neither Jamz, Kiss, or Power are gonna go anywhere for the foreseeable future. As a few intelligent people have posted these stations are, all three, billing respectably (especially for our current economy). No colon blow infomercials or .1 shares in sight.

Also, I doubt that many of you realize (at least in our case) the monetary resources that go into making studios for say... an oldies station... into studios that support the genres that CHR plays. (I know you can relate to this Lauren... I've seen the pics in the old KOOL studio on your MySpace... lol) KOOL definitely didn't have a top of the line DJ rig with turntables hooked into the board, right? In fact, it isn't even the same board. Or the same production equipment. Free FM definitely didn't have sets upon sets of turntables for the promo kids... and I could go on and on.

So in the end guys... instead of bashing one another no matter who you work for, or who you favor, why don't we instead discuss (and without 40 paragraph posts or lack of punctuation/hobby) the radio market that we all live in and listen to. Seriously guys, when was the last time someone posted a rumor about Beth and Bill?

Maybe I am a little vain, and I would love to talk about Jamz all day, but in the end, this is the Phoenix Radio forum and not the Bash Jamz/Power/John Jay and Rich forum. I'm here to learn more about this industry beyond what I already know... not to see false info posted 30 times over.

Then again, what do I know? I'm just a weekend mixer and a club DJ. ;)

Thanks for your time guys,
PCraze

Soorry but i still and always will hate jamz and cbs really screwed this sation up it was a mistake from the get go such wasted space on the radio band they should have kept is free fm.I would love to bash that piece of trash more but it is the holiday season and by the way jamz will flip evetually maybe not in the immediate furture but it will die.

Happy holidays kids

And this from an even more infrequent poster, yet avid reader, when my last day included three 16" turntables, two reel-to-reel Ampex's and 16 cart machines, rotary dial meter readings and the required squeeky chair wheels -- but no computers. I enjoy all here (almost) even down to the lumberyard comments. (What's wrong with a good digital trip timer, as long as the last TOH ID was broadcast?) Wonder who remembers, as I do, Ray Hughes and Myron Drake? That's enuf.

Man, you really DON'T have a life at all, do you?

Just thought I'd pass along a little piece of info to everyone in case you haven't already heard....despite what many people thought about current on air talent maybe not fitting in with the new slogan of "The Valleys #1 Hit Music Station", Power has resigned The Nutz In The Morning (Joey Boy and Lady La), and also that Mid-Day Chick/APD Karlie Hustle to multi year extensions. It shows that Bruce and Power are committed to their on-air staff and they are not afraid to proceed with their new slogan with their current staff. It's good to see a station believe in their on-air lineup, especially since so many other personalities have unfortunately lost their positions.

Please don't expect the Zonies to comment on this. Everything they post on this board is a lie and an effort to divert attention away from the abject failure that is KZON. Here are just a few of the recent lies and false predictions that Marky & Mikey have started so people don't notice they are down to 3 full time staff members and are 3rd place behind KISS and Power;

Power is switching format
The Nuts are being fired
Karlie Hustle is being fired
JX3 is being fired
Gio is being fired
Power is going out of business
Steve Smith is the new PD
Rob is the new PD
They are #1 and everyone else is behind them
Big Boy will be doing mornings
Firing Kid and Ruben, Nessa and Jackie Morales were budget cutbacks
They came up with their slogan before Power did
Super snake is not 50 years old
...and a bunch more that most people can now figure out are outright lies.

Difference of opinion are one thing and we can debate those here. Marky & Mikey have lied to their staff, clients, listeners and anyone else within earshot, don't expect that to change as the heat from NYC gets turned up to show some justification for this debacle.

Excuse me but Joey Boy and Lady La are not the NUTS. Joey Boy and J.Phila are the Nutz. Lady La just so happend to be fortunate enough to jump in on an already successful afternoon show, and from what I remember you campained for Ms. Pena to be the female voice but the guys convinced you otherwise. If it weren't for them she would still be bagging groceries at Sprouts and greeting customers at Fry's. Joey is a nut, that is True but you did fire the other Nut, or is he still on Vacation as the staff has been telling listeners?

you can really tell though that J.Philla is missing The Nutz in da Morning Show is not the same. You are right Lady La is not a Nut.

Sorry to break it to you but any "rumors" have come straight from the staff at KKFR, and they have been taken with a grain of salt. Half of those statements you just made have never even been rumors at KZON, only rumors on this board. Doesn't everyone in radio know not to believe any rumors they read on here anyway?
Nobody at KZON ever thought Power was going out of business. Nobody at KZON ever thought the NUTZ were being fired, with the exception of J.Philla, which wasn't known until after the fact. Karlie Hustle was never rumored to be fired. Staff at KZON happen to know JX3 was already under contract so he was never rumored to be fired either. From what I recall, the Big Boy rumors came onto this board from a poster in San Fransisco that said they heard it at a convention. The Steve Smith rumor came from this board as well. Now if KZON is down to 3 full time staff members like you say, do you really think management has time to come on this board and post all day like KKFR management has been lately?
Every single person that posts negatively about KZON is not necessarily a KKFR employee, just as everyone who posts something negative about KKFR is not necessarily a KZON employee. I think we can tell the difference and decide for ourselves who is believable and who isn't. For example... You and the others coming on here and only posting negative things, rumors, bickering back and forth, plus the fact that I know your entire post is a lie and is also based on what you "hear" doesn't make you very believable either. ::)
