Dear Mr. Board Manager editor,

I am not trying to be a wise guy here but are you from the area or in New England.I bring this up because you seem not to get the inside jokes at times on the Providence Board. I know to someone in Nevada reading the "Providence" board we seem like a bunch of wierdos. But here in Providence Talk Show Hosts,Politics, the Mob and the Prison system go hand in hand. The Station Nightclub fire for example may come up time to time. As to someone from another region may think it has nothing to do with radio here in Providence it really does.
WHJY lost thier overnight Disc Jockey there while WHJY and stations in Conneticut promoted the concert. One of the owners was an ex TV reporter. There are still outstanding lawsuits against local radio and TV stations in the region it kind of all goes together.Although the talk about this is now at a bare minimum.

For the most part to everyone who posts here sort of knows everyone somewhat personal. When Rick Cabral was our moderator he knew the inside outs of the Providence Market.Although this market is different and many from outside of the area may not get what a thread is about, everyone for the most part on the Providence board does.
Please dont be mad about me bringing this to your attention. If an another regular would like to add to this please do so I dont look like the sole fool.

Thanks,

Bravo Ken.

We GREATLY respect this board.
Too often things are taken down and if the Moderator knew the "inside' story they never would.
Thanks for reading this! Walter.

Sometimes I think you need to live in Rhode Island to fully understand how unique of a place this is. Lots of inside stuff goes on that I think only We truly understand. No disrespect meant towards Board Manager. However please understand that the people who post on this board all have a good idea of where to draw the line. Something that might offend you as a moderator typically does not even come close to offending most of the people here.

After 30 years of corruption and hijinks in this state we've developed a pretty thick skin. Most importantly we have learned to laugh a little. To live here you need a sense of humor. So please be more tolerant board manager. A sense of humor is needed here. That is how we stop ourselves from going crazy.

Thank you.

The other thing is, all the other board managers would'talk' to us on this forum, in the past.
It helped us understand why something might have been a problem.
I , last week, post 2 posts about Buddy Cianci. That he IS a Racketeer, (Federally Convicted) and that Itlo Americans (many) are offended by him and don't need a criminal on the radio. Both posts vanished in mintues.
This is in the context of Cianci working a radio gig.
You can't be sued by him, he's a public figure, I have an opinion. It conent was truthful.

Thank you for reading this.

In no way are we slamming management. Before the change over our moderator was local.
Rick used to be involved with conversations and knew when to so call punish the board.Either it be our posts were delayed from being posted and he rread every single post before it got posted or simply say we were out of line and knock the crap off. Yea, the WALE posts can get a little annoying but WALE as a radio station as been a running joke since the late 80's.If you got fired from WALE it was an honor and something to be proud of.Trust me getting fired from a job is not a funny thing but I'm sure a slew of people here who may have worked there know what I am talking.

[size=16pt]Amen......and Amen.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful input.

I need to remind everyone that there isn't a terms of service for the rest of the site and a separate one for the Providence board. What is done on one board has larger implications for the site. Out of fairness, the TOS applies to everyone.

There's an inherent problem with moderators taking part in the discussions. If you're taking part in the very conversation you're moderating, then that creates a dilemma. It raises serious concerns about neutrality. That's why site administration is not allowed to post their opinions. We're not slamming anyone for the way they choose to run their site. We simply have a fundamentally different approach. The internet's big enough for all of us.

We make no claim that our moderation is perfect. Our approach has resulted in much more traffic as well as created an environment where we've attracted respected writers; Tom Taylor and Dana Hall. We've even added licensed Arbitron ratings. It is unlikely these positive changes could have germinated under the previous incarnation of the site. I proudly stand by our record.

As far as speaking with users directly on the board...let's remember why the Providence board exists in the first place. It's for the discussion of radio in Rhode Island and adjacent parts of Massachusetts. It's not to discuss my opinion or those issues related to a specific instance of moderation.

Specific queries about a moderating decision should be directed to me. I can be reached in several ways. You can PM me or use the "Contact Us" section found at the top right hand of every page. Please document your concerns as thoroughly as possible. General complaints don't give me enough information to proceed.

To quote a line from many a talk show: "Our lines are open"

If you have a general question about site operations, then please use the Ask Radio-Info board.

We're grateful for the efforts of those affiliated with the site in the past but ultimately, we've moved on and we invite you to be part of the ever growing site called Radio-Info.com.

We have even more enhancements on the way.

Hey Kenny, thanks a lot for the kind words. I miss moderating this board, but by the explanation above, I finally understand the current approach. I didn't resign a few years back, but instead that was when the staff took things in a different direction and brought in new faces.

On another note, I am back into radio again. I do production for Citadel Providence, weekends on Lite Rock 105, and produce some Sunday shows on 630 WPRO. When radio's in your blood, you can't stay away for long. :)

Chicken coupe-former WJJF studio's

I fully respect the moderators thought. As a comparism. I'm sure there are boards on here that we may not understand some of the topics or slangs.

I should put together alist of what each stations slogans mean

WELH-Whealer School
WPRO- Providence FM
WSNE- We're Southern New England
WHJY- JOY-FM (although they don't use that anymore)
WBRU- BREW Brown University
WSRS- Worcestors Stereo Radio Station
WTKK- Talk FM
WCTK-Cat Country
WPLM - Plymouth
WSKO -Score FM
WKKB- no meaning
WWBB- We Want Baby Boomers (although they could probably go with heritage WPJB and still call themselves
............B101.WPJB sounded like like what they are doing now.
WCIB- Cape and Islands Broadcasting
WKLB- Country club years ago when they were on 105.7
WODS -Oldies
WEEI- not sure
WBCN- Boston something something network maybe
WWLI- Lite-FM
WWKX- KIX-106
WMJX- Magic 106
WFHN-Fun 107
I forget Kiss's calls

Now the AM

WDDZ- Disney
WPRO- Providence
WSKO- Score-AM
WHJJ- Not sure what they mean.Maybe something to do with the old RED SOX logo with the J's being able to wear a pair of RED SOCKS
WALE- not sure but carried over from Fall River
WHIM- pronounced like him but with a W in the front to make it a word. Now a religous station has it in Florida for the slogan With Him.
WADK-Dont know
WSAR- Dont know
WHTB-Hispanic (something) broadcasting
WARV- dont know.

others

WBLQ-Block Island Radio
WPJB- Providence Journel Bulleton
WLKW-not sure
can't think of any more
not sure what WINK's was.

WBCN... Boston Concert network, just like WHCN.. Hartford Concert Network.... there was a WRCN on Long Island too

Here's a few other things only we Southern New Englanders would really know about/understand:

WTEV/WLNE Channel 6......the only joke in Southern New England broadcasting longer running than the Providence version of the once respected WALE Fall River.

Certain "one of a kind" RI broadcasting personalities like:
Chuck Stevens
Sherm Strickhouser
Arlene Violet
Steve White
Maryann Sorrentino
Art Lake
Jack Comley
King Arthur Knight
Big Ange
Charlie Jefferds

WLKW......That's an easy one. It stood for the Roman numeral 50, followed by KW, as in Kilowatts......50 Kilowatts.

WSAR......In the 1920's or so, they once had studios at the old Sears and Roebuck department store in downtown Fall River.

WNBH......Once had studios at the old New Bedford Hotel.

WEAN......Once used the slogan "We Entertain A Nation"...used during the ownership by the Shepard Company department store.

Of course, there's lots more, but this post has to end somewhere ;D

Thanks to all for their continued use of the Providence board.

I'm glad we've had this dialogue. I truly understand your objections and see some advantages under the old system. I hope my explanation has clarified why the changes had to be made. Providence is hardly the only radio market on our site with a unique and storied history. All regions and cities have their own colloquialisms. It doesn't mean that we stop enforcing our TOS. Those very terms ultimately serve you, the user.

As I've made clear, the door to the Managing Board Editor is open. Please use it if you have an issue with moderation. The board isn't the place for it.

The fact remains that we've moved on. The changes we've made have resulted in tangible benefits for everyone.

As the thread hasn't yielded more discussion about your concerns, I am locking it.

Thanks to all who weighed in with their questions, explanations and doubts,

Managing Board Editor
