Dear WFAA:

You have spent all that money on a new shinny studio, that I really don't see that you need. It appears you have bought too much equipment with too many buttons. How about spending some bucks on some folks who can push the right buttons and the keep the news shows rolling.

For evidence I submit the last two 5PM newscast. Its not the on air folks fault. I don't know if its that you do not have enough folks behind the scenes or too many with no experience playing lets do a newscast.

Jon

Good letter :D

We need less monkeys on typewriters(i.e the cheap labor they hire) and more experienced staff who know how to run a major market newscast.

WE are talking about WFAA Ch.8 right? Pete Delkus's tease on the 5pm made it sound like we are entering another ice age and mamoths will be sheltering at Young ave.

What Belo should do is really look at their properties, and sell the ones that aren't performing as well. Take that money and pump it into the stations that they keep... WFAA & KHOU, being at the top of that list. I don't know what happened to the old saying, "Happy Employees make Good Employees." I guess Belo (and most Broadcast Companies) have forgotten about that saying. NBC's hub operation is also a disaster on-air. I haven't seen many screw ups on KXAS, but I see them all the time on WNBC & WVIT (NBC 30 Hartford), when I go home to see my folks. ABC O&O's seem to have it right. KTRK here in Houston, treats their employees well. Most of them work there until they retire. They are number one in the market from sign on to sign off, and it shows in their on-air product. Maybe one day everyone will wake up and realize it, but it's very hard when all you look at is the bottomline. Turn on the TV, and see what you look like on-air. It might be an eye-opening experience.

I agree snoman, KTRK 13 is a world class establishment, which belo could stand to learn a few lessons from. I deal alot with their people when it comes to IT issues and every single one is a class act through and through. Heck, pretty much anyone ive dealt with at Disney/ABC is pretty upbeat and likes their job.

KTRK has become the new standard to which other tv stations should follow. It used to be WFAA. "P.S." to WFAA: Please quit the introduction to "the wfaa news now in HD". It sounds like you are selling a hair conditioner or a diet soda' not a newscast. Its right up there with the "Team Weather"concept, you graciously retired as soon as it arrived, though Dave Muscari denied it was "temporary" at the time.
Very few viewers have Hd and will not until the price comes down.

That is a completely true and accurate assessment of KTRK and the nature of stations that treat their employees well. I have friends and acquaintances at every TV station in Houston and the best performing stations (more than just ratings...sales, marketing and more) are the ones that treat their employees best. Here's an accurate run down of the stations in the market and how their employees are treated based on what and who I know:

KTRK: Pleased and satisfied
UNIVISION: Happy, but anxious with new owners
TELEFUTURA (Separate from Univision): Stressed to perform
KPRC: Always keep the resume up-to-date/revolving door
KHOU: Broke and stressed (unless you are a 20+ year vet)
KRIV/KTXH: Suicidal / One of the worst employers on the planet
KHCW: Stressed, but living through it
TELEMUNDO: Pleased and satisfied
LIBERMAN PROPERTIES (TV & Radio): Death wish / Just behind KRIV as worst employers

As for the other properties, they are too insignificant to note, but you won't find many happy campers there as those folks are generally filling time trying to move up to bigger stations.

Airwaves, the only people at liberman who get respect is anyone involved with the crew of either "Secretos" or "Secretos: Houston". They're about the only money maker for that station group.
