Dear Wynton Marsalis, (Jazz at Lincoln Center)

Just a friendly reminder that there ARE different genres of jazz out there, and not every show has to be devoted to "traditional" or "classic" jazz.

I'm trying to remember the last time a show was devoted to the "disco jazz" of the 1970s: when was the last time Chuck Mangione was the guest, or Herb Alpert was brought in and allowed to perform tracks off of his disco-fused "Rise" album?

Or the "proto-Smooth Jazz" of the mid-1980s? When was Kenny G last on Jazz at Lincoln Center?

Or how about more international flavor? Let's get legendary jazz guitarist Masayoshi Takanaka or jazz saxophonist phenom Kaori Kobayashi in from Japan for a show or three.

So, he does a show on the type of music he knows and is well-informed about? Do you really want him to include stuff with which he is not familiar? There are other sources for these other sub-genres of jazz.

And Marsalis' opinion of smooth jazz, hip-hop and contemporary pop music in general is well-established--he hates all of it.

I seem to remember Chick Corea on that show a few years ago. But definitely not Kenny G. I think they see him as commercial music.

Just like most mainstream ("traditional") jazz fans.
