Dearly departed radio stations/formats

With the demise of The Lake (at least in regular over-the-air form) I was wondering what departed stations/formats are the most missed in the Buffalo/Rochester area? Ok, besides KB, what is the most missed station/format in the area? ;)

As Sandy used to say, it's KB, baby....and also the personality-driven AC versions of WBEN and WGR of the 70s and 80s.

In Rochester, the old WBBF/950 of the 60s and WAXC/1460 of the early 70s come to mind.

All five of the stations I mentioned had a lot in common--great personalities, well-programmed hit music, full service from talented news teams, and effective community outreach. They were examples of how a radio station SHOULD be.

I'm going to miss the lake.

Keep in mind, theradiokid, that The Lake will continue on at 1077thelake.com and on the HD2 channel of 107.7 The Lake.

As has been mentioned, the main frequency of 107.7 will become Newsradio 930 WBEN on FM.

All those of you who have HD radios, raise your hand. OK, now those of you who are engineering staff, and need HD radios for monitoring, put your hands down. OK, how about those who have HD in the car?

Looks like the HD2 channel of 107.7 ain't exactly gonna reach a whole lot of people. I expect that their numbers will fall into WECK territory. It'll probably take a book or two for people to realize that they're gone before they fill out their diaries.

BTW, I'll miss the Lake as an alternative to the repetitive playlists of the rest of the commercial band. I won't miss the lame imaging, or the horrendous morning show.

I'm still disappointed they didn't dare to tackle WYRK instead.
I bet they could still do well with Country on 107.7 (again).

"Here a breaking news update...

Sales of HD radios in Buffalo, New York jumped to a new high today - 3 new units were sold at stores across WNY. Those in the know tell us that there are now as many as 12 HD radios in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls metro.

Why the sudden jump in sales? Industry observers suggest the increase in sales was due directly to the move of the radio station known as "The Lake" to an HD channel".

Heh. And some people thought that they had reception problems with The Lake in analog....

Hey...I got my HD TV service a year ago!!! ;D

Radio...um...not so much...

I miss another station that once occupied the 107.7 frequency....WUWU. That and Toronto's CFNY before they jumped the shark.

The River (93.3) — now Fickle — was a favorite of mine for a while in the ’90s. It was especially good, I thought, under Bob Savage’s ownership. Later, under Heritage/Entercom, it had its moments while vacillating between classic hits and classic rock — before it was unceremoniously killed by the ill-advised (in my opinion) move of WBBF from 98.9.

Speaking of that later incarnation of ’BBF, Rochester radio has not been the same since losing its true oldies station: 99BBF and its predecessor WKLX.

The Max (106.7) — now Kiss — was an innovative, eclectic station when it signed on in early 1992. Going back to the ’80s, I loved the Bear (107.7) for a while. And in the early 2000s, I enjoyed the brief ’80s fad — including the all-’80s format briefly on CC’s 107.3. If I recall, they simply called it “Channel 107.3” (but I always knew it would be short-lived, lasting until the next format fad).

Good topic, John.

jam'n 107.3, rochester - i luv'd this station!!
i wanted to work there!!!!!!!! they played
party-mix faves as well as up.beat hip hop (the hits)
... then, my next trip down the '90/to darien lake - - it
changed...im serious, it was like the next week!!

No question - the 'GR 55 of the '70s and '80s with Stan Roberts, Larry Anderson, Frank Benny, Shane, Tom Donahue, John Otto et al.

One of the last great AM music stations in this area.

I'm kinda partial to WGR News Radio 55 myself, when Buffalo had two commercial news-talk AMs sluggin' it out, "brawl to brawl, wall to wall." ;)

When news broke out...WGR BROKE IN! I miss the news/talk formatted WGR very much! It was the best news source for Buffalo. WBEN is a pile of crap.

Let's face it, Greg Ried & Co. have gutted WBEN, and it's living off it's reputation and the fact that there's no real commercial competition. The folks on Corporate Parkway are public broadcasting's best friends.

My alltime favorite would have to be WINE-1080. Where else would you find Hernando (Phil Todero), Don Fortune, Jim Fagan in the 1080 Newsroom, and the Hound too! That little daytimer rocked between 1957 and early 1960. Some serious effort went into their programming and it paid off. Quite a contrast to the junk of today.
