Death Tied to Entercom's The End 107.9?

Not too bright to do a contest based on bodily functions and certainly not much class doing something like that. This frat boy approach to radio makes me want to yell "grow up"!

A senseless loss of life.

Interesting that a station called "The End" was involved.

Oh my god...this is ridiculous,

Seriously, it's known that drinking too much water and not pissing it out CAN KILL YOU.

1) ANYBODY who participated in this contest and made a total [EDIT]fool out of themselves over a stupid game system is bizarre

2) It seems as if Entercom management made these people sign waivers and said both to the contestants and the listeners that this is dangerous. Maybe it wasn't the smartest thing for them to do, but common sense dictates that if you really have to piss, let it out!!!! If you can't win the contest, oh well.

3) Shouldn't that young lady have called 911 instead of the radio station???

In all actuality, the End should not face any legal action from blood-sucking lawyers or greedy family members, and this should be nominated for a Darwin Award.

I wish all the staff at the End good luck in this endeavor...and I wish the family members of this young lady the best of luck in their future; I know what it's like to loose a mother at a young age.

Now, pardon me, but I need to pee...

I don't understand any part of this rant. Do you by chance do weekends at 107.9?

Nah...I've been to Sacramento a few times, but rather than that, I'm just a simple weekend radio DJ in Florida and a tender of the bar for a catering company during the week.

Sorry if it offends thee, but it makes sense to me...then again, I got pile-drived on the head many times

Cheers,

No offense to the Strange family, but after reading all the responses here, and watching and reading the amateurish media in Sacramento, no one put a gun to this woman's head, tied her up, or forced her to participate in the contest. God be with her!

Re: Latest Radio Promotion Gone Bad

I read that the Morning show had been pulled off the air as a result of this promotion... Seems kind of silly to punish a morning show who obviously must have ran the promotion through channels before doing it, for some oversight made by management or some legal ace in the ivory tower....

I'm gonna quote Forrest Gump...

"I gotta pee"

How come most people here are taking sides with the woman. Yes this is very very bad however she should have known her limit. Not only that, after it was over and she experienced pain, she should have went to the hospital. Stupid bit yes, but you have to at least consider some of the stupidity of the contestant. Look at the result of someones dumb unoriginal idea, a woman is dead. Her children have no more mom and her husband has no more wife. The morning show was fired. The promotions director will most likely be canned. Entercom is going to have to cough up millions and maybe even lose their licence over all this. And for what? A flippin game system? This all could have been avoided had the person who thought of the bit took into consideration the dangers. Dumb, just dumb. So... The End is looking for mornings huh?? Okay that was insensitive. I admit it.

Re: Latest Radio Promotion Gone Bad

So what's the latest on this? Anyone heard?

I've read a little on it, but here's how I envision it: It was a morning show contest, so the contest needed to conclude by the end of the show, needless to say, they were tight on time. They gave each of the contestants a bottle of water every 15 minutes, and they 'must' drink the water. Obviously the more the contestants drink, the quicker they'll have to go.

Does anyone know for sure if the contestants were required to drink the water? If the contestest weren't required to drink the water, the contest could have gone all day.

Yeah entercom should have done a little more research on water intoxication prior to executing this promotion. Just as that 'wikipedia' article on water intoxication stated; the maximum amount of fluids two human kidneys could process in an hour "A person with two healthy kidneys can excrete about 1.5 litres (0.39 gallons) of water per hour at maximum filtration", they should have given water based on that.

Allaccess reports that Steve Weed, The Morning Rave, Promotions Director Robin Pechota and five other staff members have been released.

Legally, that's significant.

A lawyer might say that this at least implies the station/Entercom will be unfriendly to the exited employees as the legal process is on-going. It is much easier to shoot at someone when they are not in your employ.

Of course, legally, this might only be of limited use to Entercom. Those folks were, after all, employees and agents of the station. But, there are legal arguments that might lessen that.

BTW: I did see video of the Decedent's husband reading a prepared statement. And, you know, a lawyer almost surely wrote that statement.

From allaccess.com:

10 Dismissed At KDND Over Water-Drinking Contest Death

Following the unfortunate death of a KDND (107.9 THE END)/SACRAMENTO listener (NET NEW 1/15) attributed to the death of a listener, apparently from drinking too much water, ENTERCOM/SACRAMENTO VP/Market Mgr. JOHN GEARY has released a statement: "Effective immediately, the Morning Rave program is cancelled and ten employees are no longer with the station."

A sign of the times...

The "Morning Rave" link on the station's Web site was missing Tuesday afternoon. The myspace.com social networking site for the station no longer listed morning DJs Trish, Lukas or Maney as its "friends."

Source: http://www.sacbee.com/102/story/108566.html

Also, reading through the comments at the SacBee, I came across this one: "I was driving to work ,the morning, the contest was taking place. A caller called in about 8:15 a.m. to inform the DJs about the risks the contestants were taking. "It was very dangerous and could die from too much water intake", the listener on the phone said. One of the DJ's replied, laughing "That's ok, they all signed a release forms!"
I wonder what that DJ who was on the morning show is saying now?"

I agree. It seems rather counter-productive to fire a morning show for doing its job, and that is to attract listeners. But someone's head had to roll to prove to the courts and the woman's family that something had been done about it. Those of you who remember the "Wheel of Whoopee" bit on the Steve & DC show in St. Louis back in 1993 will remember what happened there. The FCC was going to fine them, and Steve and DC were protected by their contracts, so they couldn't be fired. Their producer and PD (who wasn't even in the country at the time) ended up getting the ax.

I think firing ten people over this was a little excessive, though.

Too much water is dangerous and can kill. As does every morning show at some point do this stunt, when I was working on the Shawn and Jeff Show, we did it. We had a UCD Doctor email us, and tell us that it is dangerous, it's called Hyponatremia. My back and Kidneys hurt all day. I wonder what Rob will say about it from R.A.D Show, they bash that show all the time

Not a damn thing... (at least that I heard.) Wouldn't surprise me, since "K-Fail" is right down the hall. Although, he (Rob) did make some side remark that he was on the phone with his attorneys all weekend in the 9AM hour.

On the other hand, wouldn't it have been better NTR to use Red Bull or Rockstar instead of water?

No nasty side-effects of overdrinking water, and surely easier to score a buck or two more off of the promotion.

If they would'a only thought of that.

Dude, the DJs and promotions people are responsible for another human beings death. Nothing changes that. These people are gonna have that on their souls for the rest of their lives and when they're burning in hell for killing another human being.
