DEATH WATCH - WHO GOES FIRST

Ok we have the following stations doing some form of hip hop

95.1 Latino Vibe
98.3 Power
101.5 Jamz
99.3 The Beat

Who goes down first in '09?

Can all really last an entire year and pull a decent rating as well?

Get your baggy pants on, put your hat to the side and talk some hip hop :)

I gotta say Latino Vibe will get bounced first! With all the talk on them flipping to a regional mexican format, I doubt that their current format even makes it to '09!

Oh, that's mean.

But really......who cares?

I think the OP was asking for a more legitimate answer from people who do care. If you don't care, don't bother posting. :-\

first of all latino vibe is not even hip hop or any of that! its main compettion was 107.1 but they flip, latino vibe will probably go out first there way to past there time i remember when the firsted signed on they were reggeton and went in to this --- format they have now, they will die first!!!!

My point was, of course, was that so few people listen....who cares.

These stations get flipped so often you can't follow them without a program. The epitome of niche radio.

I would also argue that KISS FM can be thrown into the mix as a hip hop station along with Movin' 97.5. That would be 5 total English hip hop stations in the valley and, in my opinion, that is two or three too many. I honestly wonder how long The Beat will last because the format has been so unsuccessful across the country. Even satellite radio is dumping their classic hip hop station starting this Wednesday. Power will not be going anywhere and neither will KISS FM. That leaves Jamz 101.5 and Movin' 97.5. I think that one of those two will get blown up before any other English language hip hop station. The question then is, what format is lacking in the valley? For nearly the next two months, there will be no oldies station in the valley thanks to KOOL's switch to all Christmas music. ::) What about another FM talk station like Free FM? What about the recently vacated dance format or maybe a singer and standards station like 97.5 used to be. Maybe something like Jack FM, or an alternative rock station like the Zone used to be. Or, what about some things way out there, like a blues station, modern jazz, new age music or open source radio? Many possibilities, but will there be an opening anytime soon?

I'd like to see 101.5 do Alt. Rock (lets face it the Edge is an active/alt hybrid now), 97.5 do AAA and 92.7/101.1/99.3 follow suit of what happened a few years ago at Party 105/Long Island after they reverted to the Dance format a few months after abandoning it and return to ENERGY!!!! Then you're back to a reasonable amount of hip hop stations (3 including The Vibe).

101.5 turning back to Alt would be great with the right MD -- and the right MD is about to be available, thanks to Mel Karmazin cutting staff at Sirius XM. Dunno if CBS would be willing to pay what it'd take to move Bill Hutton from VA to AZ, but it'd be worth it to breathe life back into what is currently a dead format in the Valley.

Did you listen to Hutton on Lucy? He was amazing! I would love to have him back on the air here in Phoenix. His weekly Saturday Night Request Show, "XM Saturday Night," was the best on XM. I would hear songs on that show that you wouldn't hear anywhere else, like the Green Day / Oasis remix called "Boulevard of Broken Songs." It was also funny with Hutton's off-the wall humor and segments, like the cheap giveaways of the night and the "Million Dollar (Candybar) Grand Finale." Unfortunately, I don't think a local station like KZON would be able to wrangle such a big-time and smart alternative DJ/PD.

KZON as an indie wouldn't be able to swing a Hutton; as a CBS station, though, the company could use him to MD (and maybe PD) in multiple cities. Not saying they will, just that they could and it'd be good for the Valley and for the company.

Which means there's no chance in hell of it actually happening.

I don't understand this board's fascination with KZON returning to alternative. Looking at the numbers over at All Access, I'm seeing better numbers now than I recall seeing back in the days of either Alternative, AAA, or Free FM.

The only time I ever heard Hutton on Lucy was a giveaway bit on Saturday night that was a 6 minute rambling mess. But that was my favorite XM channel.

I don't think i have ever seen such a hated station as kzon. Usually hated stations end up getting blown up so cbs what u waiting for KILL IT NOW

Alright...c'mon people...REALITY CHECK....you can wine all you want and complain...but JAMZ is not going anywhare for a while...if you really want to listen to some altertative...pop in a cd or fire up the IPOD like the rest of the world...
Every day its the same complaint by each and everyone of you that dont like hip hop....waaaa waaa bring back the ZONE waaaaa ::)

You can consider THE VIBE somewhat HIP HOP...well atleast 4 times an hour...other times they are spanish pop and reggaeton!
Come February you can cosider them REGIONALE MEXICAN....because thats exactly what they will become now that Liberman broadcasting owns them.

If Trumper was smart (wich he obviously isnt since he seems to like to keep MOVIN on life support) He could have taken Movin to a TRUE JAMMING OLDIES FORMAT...or if he wants to make some serious fast cash, he can beat Liberman to the punch and go the Regional Mex route...There is also the spanish pop format that can be filled not that KVVA has flipped.

I like some hip hop.I listen to power some aand kiss some i just hate jamz with a passion!!! It is just a bad station owned by clueless people i would even venture to say cbs radio phoenix is the most incompetent of all the cbs radio markets in the country. They know what they are doing in los angeles why not phoenix???????

Your right it won't go anywhere for awhile but it will eventually get blown up and that will be a joyous day in phoenix radio:)

For God's sake, how many posts are we going to have to endure with someone screaming for the return of Zone and Energy? Even I admit, Zone was amazing and Energy was exceptionally unique, but both of those stations are in the past. Even if they did come back, they will be so different than what they were that the people who want them back would complain about how they aren't what they used to be.

Times have changed and the people who would be running, Marketing, programming and staff them would be different. On top of that, the business has changed, Howard is gone from terrestrial radio (referencing the Zone) and PPM is coming. Lightning can strike twice in the same place, but is SO rare. Even CBS is not showing the kind of ratings they hoped for in the relaunch of the "B" in Pittsburgh. However, better than what Free-Fm and K-Rock had, in it's later days, on the same signal. Kind of like here, JAMZ is performing better than Free-FM, thanks in part to KTAR-FM having such a strong launch.

BTW, Edge is far from Active/Alt Hybrid. They play too many Alt/Pop songs to be anywhere near Active.

Huh? And KOOL FM and KMLE?

LA has issues with at least three of the stations in the cluster, so that is not a good comparison, either.

I gotta second this. Jamz might not be the favorite station of the niche-format addicts here, but the fact is they've got better ratings than Energy EVER had, and the old (and by old I mean pre-Howard/Pratt) Zone was at best a 2 share radio station. AAA or FM Talk are dead formats as far as I can tell, and "alternative" used to mean something, but I'm not sure it means anything anymore. I'm guessing the younger demos who are into really alternative music aren't looking to the radio for their fix.

Jamz, Power, Latino Vibe and to a lesser extent Kiss and Mega are super-serving a demo that still counts on radio for their music. The hip-hop demo is still passionate about their music AND the radio they get it from, and if I'm a programmer looking to find an audience, I'm going for those people.

Quite frankly, I do not mind the posts. People know what they like, and they are passionate about it. Apparently, others are not too happy about those posts, so therefore, they can either start their own posts to complain, or choose not to read this thread. Result? Everybody happy.

It is perhaps the peoples' clamoring which some of you may have to endure (as it may be), that allows them to express their opinions on the types of music we hear (perhaps in some small degree) on the radio that sometimes makes a difference. If all of the Oldies, Mega "Oldies", Movin "Oldies", Mix "Oldies" can reminisce of what used to be by playing the same songs over and over, I think the listeners can reminisce of their former stations or songs that do not get airplay as well. Energy 92.7 & 5 in Chicago went away, but the listeners now have the Dance Factory, and like it.

When Jamz, Movin, or Vibe disappear, you'll get to enjoy it all over again...
