Debi Diaz out at KLUV

Jody has said a couple times this week that there will be nothing but a Ficus sitting at the mic come next week. Wonder what that means?? ???

After 16 years, Debi Diaz was let go this morning. :(

NO!!!! She is such a nice lady - I've met her a couple of times at remotes. And her musical taste seemed to be really close to mine. Hopefully she immediately drove over to Platinum and put in her application.

This just completely SICKENS me. Yeah, I'm sure she was making too much money (i.e. over $30K) and CBS didn't give a damn about her longtime following, her dedication to the station, and her contributions over the years that played a LARGE part in KLUV's ratings success. When she started there in 1991, what was KLUV? A wannabe oldies station with consistently mediocre ratings, still under the misguided Tenaglia ownership, and with Brinkman in the PD chair only 3 years...waiting for his audience to "age" so the station could get some momentum going. I guess Summers and Cresswell better keep some empty boxes handy...much as I HATE to say that. What a piss-poor, pathetic, mindless, idiotic, moronic, short-sighted and ill-thought decision to make. Shame on you, CBS. I'd rather see you sell the station than to let go of all the folks who built it up for you. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I posted the following three Fridays ago on the Coast To Coast Board,
and I'm not sure it got much "face time"--but I thought there wasn't
really one local/regional board to put it on. After what happened at
KLUV today, and in the past few weeks, maybe DFW is the operative
place for it, although one could make a case for Phoenix or anywhere
else C(BS) has gutted one of their oldies classic hits stations, or really
almost any market/cluster/format these days.

From 11/21/08, but just as relevant, if not more so, now:

This must be a terrible day if you're a DJ.

If you do AM drive, you suffer through the whole show wondering
what's going to happen when you get off the air.

If you're middays, you wonder what could happen while you're on the air.

If you do PM drive, you worry about what might happen when you
get to the station.

If you're evenings, you...oh wait...there are no more evening jocks.
You were "tomkent-sized" already.

And how big is Dan Mason's bonus this year?

So do all CBS on air female jocks have to watch their backs now? Debbi gone, and now word that Carla Marion from KRLD is gone as well.

Russ Martin.

Like the rest of you, I'm shocked at this. It's very sad. I knew Debi when I lived in Dallas 12 years ago. She was a hard person to get to know, but, once you got to know her, she was as good as gold. I hope she finds something soon. She's too good to be on the beach for long.

Man, what a terrible year for market #5 radio veterans this has been. :(

This is just sickening. :p

I have to wondeer if CBS is running off the good ones in an effort to sell. Isn't this protocol for such a situation?

Protocol is usually to do whatever it takes to pad the bottom line. This is the same thing we saw ABC do before the Citadel sale, and Clear Channel did some as well before the recent selloff.

So if you're making more than what a semi-seasoned, semi-trained liner card reader makes (at CBS, that's about $15 an hour) then I'd keep some empty boxes and packing tape handy. Sad. Very sad. Funny how no one has said a thing about any MANAGEMENT changes/combining of duties/etc. I know of a couple whose salaries would save a buttload off the bottom line of the Dallas cluster, and one that could be shipped back to Market #33 where he came from. But before that ever happens, you can bet that all the CBS music stations will be pared down to live talent ONLY during morning drive, with voicetracking the rest of the day and night.

I normally just read this forum... but I just have to say I'm so sickened by the actions of CBS..... KLUV 'celebrating' 25 years and they let their 16 year veteran go... KLUV will not be the same without Debi. I wish her well.

Actually, all of the LSMs were either let go or kept on if they were willing to go into a sales position. Also, the local HR rep was let go.
Sales staff also took a cut in their commission rate recently.

In the case of Debi Diaz.....A liner card reader can be replaced with voice tracking and listeners will not know the difference. This is only the beginning. Wait until KLUV is 100% automated.

They just let go of the best Disc Jockey they had and wonderful lady, thanks a lot. We will be listening to Platinum. Good day

Sad states of affairs at KLUV, when you let your best on-air personality go and leave Jody Dean....Debi, Like Carla Marion over at 1080, is going to land on her feet just fine, I have no doubt...

So you're calling Debi a liner card reader? Paleeeeeze. Debi had PERSONALITY. She talked to callers on the air. She interacted with and related to the listeners. She had empathy. She was funny without going overboard. She commanded respect. She knew her music. Summing up her career with the term "liner card reader" is really a slap in the face. Far as today's radio, she worked within the confines of it, but made it work for her. She worked those alloted, precious seconds of talktime to the max. She may not have gotten much credit on this board or perhaps in the radio community over the years, but she did her job QUITE well. She would have meshed well with the KVIL of old.

Oh yeah, just a matter of time before KLUV is at least 80% automated. Jody will stay, but the rest, who knows? Gomez is needed overnights since he oversees that "complex" automation setup at KOAI KMVN and KJKK, as well as his own live (for now) show. Summers? It would be a great loss to the station, but I have a funny feeling that it's just a matter of time. Summers needs to do a syndicated oldies show over satellite or somewhere...he knows his stuff inside and out.

In the land of the blind, the one eyed liner card reader is king (or queen). If you consider anything that KLUV has every done as personality, then you have no concept of what a personality dj is. A personality dj can adlib, can do humor and is bigger than life. This means the likes of a young Dick Biondi, Dan Ingram, Gary Owens, Larry Lujack, B. Mitchell Reed, Barney Pip, Bwana Johnny, Charlie Tuna and others of the ilk. Be it Debi Diaz or anyone else who has ever worked at KLUV, nobody who has ever worked at KLUV is any type of personality, at any level, in comparison to the above.

OMG, Radio"Truth", I thought we were long done with you. I'm not going to fight the same fight with you again, that only the jocks from your youth are the ones we all should cherish, and anyone who's come since is a blithering wannabe idiot. Radio's not played by the same rules these days. And I never said Debi had the chops of any of the ones you listed...but in TODAY'S radio, working within the CONFINES of it, I can't think of too many currently on the air who do a better job with it than Debi did. Spin this all you want, but I can't make my statements any clearer. You, of course, are not required to share my opinion.
