Debut Of "Yesterday's Top Secrets" Set For October 2

You say you want a revolution? Well, it will all get underway at 8pm on Thursday, October 2 when revolutionary music on revolutionary radio comes to Columbus. "Yesterday's Top Secrets" is a show I'll be hosting that will combine songs from the Sixties (oldies that aren't old, because they haven't been played to death on other stations) with later music that was inspired by the fun and the freedom of the Sixties (alternative music that was simply a pleasant alternative to all of the disco that surrounded it when it first came out). Special weekly "Featured Artist" pairings will include The Beatles and Buzzcocks, The Rolling Stones and The Ramones, The Beach Boys and Big Dipper, Jefferson Airplane and Joy Division, and Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Cramps. The hour-long show will air on WCRS-FM (98.3/102.1) on Thursday and Friday nights at 8, and for those seeking assistance in picking up the station's signal, reception tips are provided through its website at www.wcrsfm.org.

I was deeply involved with Columbus' music scene during the 1980s when I published over one hundred issues of my fanzine, The Offense, and promoted over fifty concerts featuring bands such as the Pixies, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and the Cocteau Twins. It was the rock and roll music of the '60s that I grew up with, however, and so I'm excited about being given the opportunity to expand my horizons and present to our town a show that will shine a long-overdue spotlight not on the best-known songs of the '60s, '70s, and '80s, but rather on some of the best.

any chance the stations streams online?

Streaming isn't available at this time, but they're working on it. All of the "YTS" shows will be archived on the station's website and should be available for later listening in that manner within the next month.

That would be cool! But, xi, be advised that Tim poo-poohed the suggestion of starting Yesterday's Top Secrets as an Internet-only endeavor. (He was rather inflexible on that, in fact!) Don't be disappointed if he feels he doesn't need the Internet's help.

I, for one, am looking forward to learning all about The Cramps.

Yours in Sound Exchange,
JbC

If you get permission from the station, I could set up a stream later tonight. That is, as long as I can get the signal in my basement.

This is what I've been advised: "It is the policy of the station to neither grant permission nor deny permission for listeners of the station to convert the off-air signal to a stream for listening among a small group of friends." However, I've also been told that it's typically difficult to receive the station in basements, so you may have to run an audio cable from an upstairs receiver down to the computer in the basement.

In my limited testing last night with a decent quality receiver and antenna, I was unable to get either signal. I am in Columbus between Hilliard and UA, just south of Fishinger Rd. According to coverage maps, I am outside the primary signal for 98.3, but I can receive it in the car, so I'll try a couple more things.

While listening to some of the programming last night (WCRS's first time broadcasting past 8:00), I noticed numerous brief bits of silence which were always followed by catch-up skip-aheads in the music or voice. The people at the station are aware of the problem and working to correct it, but if these same interruptions decide to strike "Secrets" tonight then I'll certainly understand an annoyed and frustrated listener giving up and turning off. When the shows are all archived later, they can then be heard without this affliction.
I've got my fingers crossed ...

Sounds like an automation or STL issue. I know there are quite a few LPFMs out there that are using IP based STL rigs due to the high cost of microwave radios and T1 or other program delivery circuits. IP based delivery would still worry me though since there's no QoS guarantee.

I can't remember where I read it but I think 102.1 uses Winamp and Shoutcast to get the signal to their transmitter in NE Columbus.

Either 1) no one listened or 2) all that anyone can do is sit in stunned silence over the magnificence of the show. ;D

Come on, where's the feedback, the constructive criticism, the personal attacks from you guys?! Actually, willcail, the tech issues seemed to pretty well clear up before "Secrets" went on the air -- only two teeny-tiny skips during Thursday's show, and not a one during Friday's! Hip-hip-hooray!! Thanks a million, Eugene.
Well, anyways, for those interested there will be two brand new shows this week at 8:00 on those same two nights, and the Featured Artist pairing will once again be The Beatles and Buzzcocks, same as it was last week. Hey, you know what I'm going to do for everyone? I've seen others on this board list songs that are aired by certain stations over certain periods of time, so here's everything that was played during the first two editions of "Yesterday's Top Secrets" on WCRS (and no, there weren't any train wrecks cause I tied everything together brilliantly!!!):
