December 10: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on December 10. Discuss or comment as you please……

1911: Journalist Chet Huntley is born in Cardwell, Montana.

1952: Actress Susan Dey (The Partridge Family, L.A. Law) is born in Pekin, Illinois.

1953: KOMO-TV (channel 4) signs on in Seattle, Washington.

1953: Cleveland’s WXEL (now WJW-TV) moves from channel 9 to channel 8. Its former channel 9 allocation is moved to Steubenville, Ohio and given to a new station, WSTV-TV (now WTOV); the switch takes place only two weeks before WSTV-TV goes on the air.

1999: Actress Shirley Hemphill (What’s Happening) dies in West Covina, California of kidney failure, aged 52.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

This classic radio event on Dec. 10 would also influence television history later:

1927: The WSM Barn Dance is renamed the Grand Ole Opry. This name change occurred as the program followed the NBC Radio Network's Music Appreciation Hour, which contained classical music and "Grand Opera" musical selections. Announcer George D. "Judge" Hay followed the evening's first "Barn Dance" song, "The Pan American Blues" by the "Harmonica Wizard" DeFord Bailey by commenting, ""For the past hour, we have been listening to music taken largely from Grand Opera. From now on we will present the 'Grand Ole Opry.'" The name stuck and the rest is history.

1961: Actress/singer Nia Peeples is born as Virenia Gwendolyn Peeples in Hollywood, CA. Her TV credits include roles on "Young and the Restless" and "Walker, Texas Ranger," as well as host of "The Party Machine with Nia Peeples" in 1991 (which followed Arsenio Hall on most stations that carried his show).

The "Party Machine" was alluded to in the May 18, 1991 episode of SNL in the "Carsenio Show" skit (with Dana Carvey's Johnny Carson "playing" Carsenio--with guest George Wendt) with the promo for "Ed McMahon's Party Machine." This skit is on Hulu at:

Also, tying Nia Peeples into the program preemptions thread--back in the 1990-91 season I recall then-St. Louis ABC affiliate KTVI-2 (now Fox) getting into hot water with the network over their plans to bump "Nightline" by 90 minutes to midnight in order to air Arsenio and Nia Peeples. IIRC KTVI "compromised" by sandwiching Nightline to 11:30 between Arsenio and Nia.

Also the date of the premiere of Mighty Mouse Playhouse in 1955.

Mister Trouble never hangs around
When he hears this Mighty sound.
"Here I come to save the day"
That means that Mighty Mouse is on his way.
Yes sir, when there is a wrong to right
Mighty Mouse will join the fight.
On the sea or on the land,
He gets the situation well in hand.

Also the birthdate in 1941 of Tommy Rettig, Lassie's first owner on TV.
