December 21: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on December 21. Discuss or comment as you please……

1935: Talk show host Phil Donahue is born in Cleveland, Ohio.

1952: WSBT-TV (channel 22) signs on in South Bend, Indiana.

1953: KOMU-TV begins operating on channel 8 in Columbia, Missouri. It is currently the only commercial TV station in the U.S. owned by a major university (University of Missouri–Columbia).

1955: Actress Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle) is born in Greendale, Wisconsin.

1957: KVII-TV (channel 7) signs on in Amarillo, Texas.

1957: Actor/comedian Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) is born in Queens, New York.

1966: A TV adaptation of “A Christmas Memory” (Truman Capote's childhood experiences, as captured in his 1956 memoir), is broadcast on ABC Stage 67. It is narrated by Capote himself, and features Geraldine Page in an Emmy Award-winning performance.

1967: NBC’s Dragnet first airs the episode “A Christmas Story,” a very faithful remake of the popular 1953 Christmas-themed episode “Big Little Jesus.” The original version (the only color episode produced during the series’ 1950’s run) had been an annual holiday staple; NBC apparently wanted a new version with the then-current cast. It is the only original episode to be remade for the 1960’s revival.

1970: WUTV (channel 29) begins broadcasting in Buffalo, New York.

1974: The short-lived animated series Devlin airs the last of its 16 episodes on ABC. The show’s protagonist is Ernie Devlin, a stunt motorcyclist with a traveling circus (inspired by the huge popularity of Evel Knievel).

1974: Actor Richard Long (The Big Valley, Nanny and the Professor) dies, aged 47, after suffering multiple heart attacks.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

1978: Former child actor Mike Vitar (best known for his roles in the movies "The Sandlot," and "D2" and "D3" of the "Mighty Ducks" trilogy), is born in LA. He also made guest appearances on the TV series "Brooklyn Bridge" in 1991, and "Chicago Hope" in 1997.

And because of the year in the title of the 1967-70 revival changing every season, "The Christmas Story" episode as shown on Nick at Nite and TV Land in past years is a curious hybrid: Dragnet 1970 opening title, Dragnet 1969 theme music . . . and the original airing of this remake being within Dragnet 1968.
