December 31: THis Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on December 31. Discuss or comment as you please……

1932: Producer/director George Schlatter (Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In) is born in Birmingham, Alabama.

1938: Following almost two years of intermittent tests, the first regularly scheduled TV broadcasts take place in Moscow, U.S.S.R.

1952: WGAL (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) moves from channel 4 to channel 8 to avoid interference with Washington’s WRC-TV.

1953: WFBC-TV (channel 4, now WYFF) signs on in Greenville, South Carolina.

1953: WAYS-TV (channel 36) begins operating in Charlotte, North Carolina. A puny signal and the inherent limitations of UHF in the era cause the station to go dark 14 months later. The dormant license would be returned to the air a decade later as WCCB-TV, which would move to channel 18 two years later, and the channel would subsequently be occupied by WCTU-TV (later WRET, WPCQ-TV, and now WCNC-TV).

1956: Bob Barker makes his game show debut on Truth or Consequences, taking over hosting duties from Jack Bailey.

1960: At 10 p.m. EST, CFTO-TV (channel 9) begins broadcasting in Toronto, Ontario. The first broadcast is a telethon for the Ontario Association for Retarded Children.

1960: Norma Zimmer officially becomes Lawrence Welk's “Champagne Lady” on The Lawrence Welk Show.

1961: RTÉ (Radio Telefís Éireann) begins television broadcasts, bringing TV to the Republic of Ireland for the first time.

1962: Match Game premieres on NBC.

1971: KAID (channel 4) launches in Boise, bringing public television to Idaho.

1971: After 13 years on the air, KRSD-TV (channel 7) in Rapid City, South Dakota leaves the air for good. The channel would later be reoccupied by KEVN.

1971: Actor Pete Duel (Alias Smith and Jones), aged 31, dies from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

1981: Color TV is introduced in Turkey.

1982: Short-lived Another World spin-off Texas airs its 617th and final episode on NBC.

1982: After 19 seasons and 5,280 episodes on NBC, the soap opera The Doctors airs its final show.

1985: Musician/actor Ricky Nelson (The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet), aged 45, and six others are killed when their chartered DC-3 crashes near De Kalb, Texas. The fire and subsequent crash are officially theorized to have been caused by a defective cabin heater, but rumors continue to this day to the effect that Nelson or others were freebasing cocaine in the plane, starting the fire.

1999: Time magazine names The Simpsons “the 20th century's best television series.”

2004: Longtime WECT (Wilmington, North Carolina) anchorman Ken Murphy retires after 40 years with the station.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

1943: Singer John Denver (d. Oct. 12, 1997, born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr) is born in Roswell, NM. His career also included television appearances on The Tonight Show, The Muppet Show, and the 1979 special and album "John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together" (featuring the Twelve Days of Christmas with Miss Piggy's "Five GOOOOLLLLDDD RINGS! bum-bum-bum-bum . . .").

Some of John Denver's earliest TV appearances were on the Syndicated Upbeat show (probably 1970-71) out of WEWS, Cleveland..Seeing him in these appearances, you wouldnt know it was the same person..

How times have changed - no organization would use that name anymore.

One more year and CFTO will have its 50th anniversary. Wonder if they'll start marking it in the next while.

Re; Match Game;
Theme song that day - and for many years, "A Swingin' Safari" (not the Billy Vaughn version) but by Bert Kaempfert.

"This is Johnny Olsen Speaking."

2010 (but actually bumped and prepared 12/29/2010): After near-daily bumps and searches since May 28, 2009, Tim from Springfield, IL has decided to retire from his "duties" of bumping each day's TDITVH threads (too busy with work and other things).

Over the years there have been a LOT more stories about this crash than just the freebasing cocaine rumors, such as...

*Rick Nelson was flat broke at the time of the crash, even going as far as calling up David Cassidy just before his final concert so he can borrow a few bucks from Cassidy ( odd..from what I can recall David Cassidy in 1985..well didn't he file bankruptcy at the time? )

*The Nelson Family ( David, Harriet, Matthew and Gunnar ) didn't known anything about the crash until they had saw it on TV. ( This story was confirmed in the report of the crash ).

*Rick Nelson during his last concert had announced to the crowd after he had just did a number by Buddy Holly "....well..tonight Buddy and I will have one thing in common...BOOM ! !"

*Just before the plane crashed a woman and her daughter saw Rick Nelson banging on the window and screaming "..help us help us..I don't want to die" while the same woman claimed in the accident report that the plane was so low that she could had reached out of her child's window and actually touch the plane.

Hard to believe this crash was 25 years ago.

Two other soaps broadcast their last episodes on Dec. 31:
the other "Another World" spinoff, "Somerset," in 1976; and
"The Doctors" in 1982 (just missing its 20th anniversary, which
would have taken place April 1, 1983).

Also, in 1951, the debut of "The Big Payoff," with husbands
competing for vacation trips and, for their wives, mink coats
(modeled by Bess Myerson). I have a feeling that if that show
were on today, animal-rights activists would have a field day.

Some of the NBC game shows from 40 years ago today (New Year's Eve 1979--Monday, Dec. 31, 1979) are on YouTube. Someone taped them from WNBC New York.

"Password Plus" (guests Brett Somers and Ross Martin): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOUPwH4XlX4

"Card Sharks": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DWaW6E_nJU

"High Rollers": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtCLwY5NFyg (with Alex Trebek wearing a tux)

"Hollywood Squares": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5xdqw1GX3c

However, only 2 of 4 parts of "Wheel of Fortune" from NYE '79 can be found:

--Part 3 of 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ink4ndyZ2b0

Then later that night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, ABC affiliate KCRG-9 closes their 10PM newscast (presumably) with a staff video set to the tune of The Salsoul Orchestra's "New Year's Medley" (which includes Auld Lang Syne):

Enjoy!

Regional TV history was made on December 31st, 2019, at least in the PacNW! KING-5 Seattle's New Year's at the Needle broadcast, rocked by high winds, was unable to show fireworks from the Space Needle for (I believe) the first time this century. Instead, a light show aired. A further attempt at 2:00am to light off fireworks also failed, leading to a full cancellation.

It's going to be a strange year......

ABC 2000

Can't forget ABC's 24 hour New Years Broadcast that began early on December 31, 1999 and ran for twenty-four hours. ABC 2000 took us around the world to witness the New Years celebrations live as they happened...from the South Sea Islands in the Pacific, Beijing and Tokyo, Moscow, Paris, London, Rome, Times Square, Las Vegas and Los Angeles...and so much more. Peter Jennings hostede the broadcast which originated from their Times Square Studios. I was ill that December and I think I watched abpout 18 to 20 straight hours. Amazing television.
