Just a few random TV related events that happened on December 7. Discuss or comment as you please……
1923: Actor Ted Knight (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Too Close For Comfort) is born (as Tadeusz Wladyslaw Konopka) in Terryville, Connecticut.
1941: New York’s WNBT airs a special news report on the Pearl Harbor attack, pre-empting regular programming, a New York Rangers hockey game. (This is almost certainly the first television pre-emption due to a breaking news story.)
1941: Actor Christopher Connelly (Peyton Place) is born in Wichita, Kansas.
1942: Game show host Peter Tomarken (Press Your Luck) is born in Olean, New York.
1952: KKTV (channel 11) signs on in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
1954: KCTS (channel 9) begins broadcasting from the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle. The station would spend much of its first two decades with the primary function of providing classroom instructional programs used in Washington State's K–12 schools, plus airing a handful of NET programs. With the advent of PBS in 1970, along with facility upgrades (the station would not be full-color until well into the 70’s), KCTS would begin to attract a more general viewing audience.
1968: Writer/Producer/Songwriter Nat Hiken (Car 54 Where Are You?, The Phil Silvers Show) dies in Brentwood, California, aged 54. Hiken is credited with discovering and advancing the TV careers of such future stars as Fred Gwynne, Alan Alda, and Dick Van Dykə.
1978: Actress Shiri Appleby (Roswell) is born in Los Angeles.
(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..)
