30 years ago tonight John Lennon was assasinated outside his Dakota apartment in New York City. A remembrance from Yoko Ono: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/08/opinion/08ono.html?ref=opinion I was lsitening to KLIF (1190) when the story broke. They began playing this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM0Z75KEd_o & other John Lennon songs through the night & following days. They would mix in calls from listeners with their remembrances of Mr. Lennon. Many were from former KLIF listeners who had tuned back in when they heard the news.

Marty Robbins died 2 years later on December 8, and this would have been Jim Morrison's 67th birthday.

A notable day for music history.

Indeed.

Tonite at 7 on 98.7 KLUV...John Lennon's last interview. Conducted in his apartment at The Dakota just hours before his death on 12/2/80. The interview and great Lennon music and memories. In North Texas, 98.7 on the dial...or stream it live at www.KLUV.com.

Great link, great song. I got to meet Marty a couple of times & he was a very nice man.

In keeping with the local theme of this board, Marty would often visit Bill Mack at the WBAP studios during Bill's nighttime show. Here's a short snippet - I'd love to hear the many hours of tape from these visits. He was a true talent.

Also, Dimebag Darrell of Pantera was gunned down on 12/8/2004 in Columbus, Ohio.

Heard most of it. Good stuff. Thanks for the heads up.

I like a good bit of what WBAP is doing nowadays, but I also miss it being a full service Country music station. Thanks for posting Bill Mack/Marty Robbins link.

WSM & KWKH are about the only major AM's left who program Classic Country. We won't hear any more spontaneous radio like this with the current cookie-cutter mentality of stations.

Back then, we'd tune in WBAP/Bill Mack at night from Hot Springs, AR and it was clear as a bell. Bill had a fun show & great music. Ronnie Milsap showed up on "The Hill" one night & on a dare drove his own bus down Oakland (with them telling him directions since he is blind.) You never knew what or who to expect on his show.

As Archie Bunker would say, those were the days.

Geez, radio.info should charge KLUV for this commercial :)

Will the broadcast be live or ... voicetracked?

Now, it's just a high-powered outlets for radical idiots, including the hosts, to spew lies about the poltical scene.

My relatives in Northeast Texas (Titus County) regularly listened to WBAP back then. Pretty much anytime the radio was on & they weren't listening to their local KIMP. This one was popular in those days : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRZcQsGQbE0

Dimebag was shot onstage while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio.

You're thinking of Great White guitarist Ty Longley, who died on February 20, 2003 from a fire that ensued when pyrotechnics used by the band's crew created a spray of sparks that ignited the foam soundproofing material behind the stage. Tragically, one hundred people at The Station night club in Rhode Island also died in the fire that followed.
