December Book

B 101 posted huge numbers with the all-Christmas format to themselves in Philly. On the rock front, MGK came in on top with MMR #2, RFF #3, and YSP rising but still a lot of work to do. Any surprises?

The Sunny listeners from years past listened to B101 this year. Next year, Clear Channel will want an all-Christmas station in Philly.

I listened to Sunny for 4 Christmas seasons and still can't listen to B-101. I heard it in some stores during the season and that monotone, automated backannouncing was really annoying. Sounds like the pre-satellite era syndicated Drake Chennault 70's backannouncing (such as Great American Country that ran on WXKW Allentown with Bob Kingsley's voice after every song 24/7). I luckily have Sirius now with at least 3 choices for Christmas music and occassionally put on WJBR, and then CDs and internet out of market stations, but somehow Sunny had just the right formula for my tastes. WISX in 20th place may point to the idea of CC putting on a Christmas station as the poster above noted. Why not a "Sunny Christmas" on 106.1? Lots of stations change their imaging for the 6 week season.

Other notes: WHYY made a huge jump to 11th place, so now WIP is the top 'talk' station, followed by WHYY, with that 'big' station dropping to tie for 15th and WNTP in 30th. Could WPEN do worse than 28th with a talk station with a moderate or liberal lean? Looks like the adult AC audience who didn't want all Christmas tuned to WOGL, WDAS-FM and WXTU. WPPZ did very well with their limited signal, may have been a Christmas-related jump, too.

Expect it on my1061. I don't know why they didn't this season, but anyway, it looks like them and Ben-fm got hurt badly by the bee,

Where did Wnjc finish in at this I am sure my New Years bash finished first from 7-745pm ;)

Radio Disney WWJZ 640 Mt. Holly not on the PPM radar at all. Strikes me as odd. Is this often the case?

One would expect their ratings to show an upsurge, since the "beauty pagent" has changed from all persons 12+ to all persons 6+. I bet most of Radio Disney's audience is between 6 and 12. Once a kid turns 12, he/she is probably listening to Q102.

Show me a 6-12 year old kid that knows AM ...

And I'll show you a kid that's out of touch with reality.

Theres a Disney report that came out on this matter. From the report it seems most of those kids are not going over to Top 40 radio. Theres no tweener station

All Radio Disney wants is the parents to listen so they can go out and buy little Julia High School Musical 9er on DVD. In fact, Radio Disney doesn't even consider itself a radio station..just a 24/7 commercial.

I've heard some people say on other regional boards that they listen to Radio Disney because they think it's a better CHR than the actual CHR in their market :D

I could see the 6-12aged females getting into Disney Radio as they'd seem to be the target audience for the Disney Channel on cable. I could see moms showing their 6 year olds 640AM Radio Disney and the young girls digging it as it sure sounds a lot like their sister station on cable TV. Is Arbitron giving people meters to 6 to 12 year olds? If not, then it would make sense why WWJZ 640 doesn't show up.

It would be interesting to find out more about who actually listens to Disney Radio, not just in Philly/Wilmington/Trenton area, but nationally. Apparently Disney's making money with their radio network or they'd drop it. Someone is tuning in that Disney values. It could be all those soccer moms "making" their daughters listen to AM 640. How many of the Disney Radio stations are on AM? I looked on their web site and they don't just list the stations, you have to click on each city or state to get the info for that area. Cumberlain MD's Disney station is FM 100, for example. However, of the five I checked that was the only FM station, so they may go for AM as it would be cheaper if available. Interestingly, they show WWJZ 640 as a Philly station when you click on PA, but don't show it when you click on NJ and that station is from North Jersey, I believe.

One thing people don't realize is that Radio Disney is on XM and Sirius in CLEAR SOUND. I know if I had the choice (well I do) to listen to some crappy AM or the clear sound of satellite, it is obvious I would choose XM/Sirius.

This could possibly be a reason it doesnt show up on PPM's. A lot of parents these days are the parents getting new cars with satellite already installed. People dont realize that parents are not OUR parents (60 and 70 year olds) but rather the 30 and 40 year olds.

I believe that Arbitron doesn't measure XM/Sirius. That is a shame, as it would be interesting to see if what you say is correct. That the kids listening to Radio Disney are listening via XM/Sirius. (I didn't notice when visiting the Radio Disney web site, but you might also be able to listen via the web.) I guess, when I think about it, it isn't too surprising that these younger parents are "ponying up the money" for XM/Sirius radio for their SUV's as I've noticed many of these SUV's with DVD screens playing in the back seat to keep their children entertained. In fact I noticed an SUV one day that had two different things playing on two different screens in the back seat at the same time, each child getting to view what they desire. With the DVD's available in cars, Radio Disney may have a hard time getting those 6 year olds to listen to even XM/Sirius when they can watch Barney, or whomever on a DVD. We've come along ways, my kids would be given their own coloring book with a few crayons to entertain them, or they could listen to what Mom and Dad had playing on the radio. color]

1: oaktree...my youngest son, now 19, was a huge Disney listener when 6-11 years old. So much in fact, he was caught going through "dad's stuff" in the workroom. I asked what he wanted, "a Zenith". For what? "That way when 640 goes away at dark, I can listen to 1560 in New York'. Why a Zenith? "I heard you and Mike (Venditti) say they pick up more stations". That is a true, unembellished story.

1a: WWJZ is licensed to Mt. Holly, 4 tower array.
2a: Arbitron DOES rate XM/Sirius, but nationally, not market by market. I have the report on my desk. The #1 rated show, Stern, has fewer listeners nationwide than he had in New York alone. I'd venture to say, in the Philly market, there's more listeners to Sam Lit and
Jim Nettleton's enterprises than ALL the oldies sat channels combined.
