December PPM/Raleigh-Durham

  • Spoken word formats still take #1 and #2, though both have similar drops. WTKK '106-1 FM Talk' leads for a fourth straight month, though down 0.7 share from their record November 9.9 to a 9.2, while WUNC-FM is down 0.8 share for a second-place 8.2.
  • Adult R&B WFXC/WFXK "Foxy 107-104" is up nearly a whole share to take third place, knocking WRAL-FM "Mix 101.5"--which apparently didn't go all-Christmas this year--to fourth place (7.4 to 6.9)
  • Country WQDR drops another 0.2 share from 3.9 to 3.7, while iHeart competitor WNCB "B 93.9" is up from 2.9 to 3.3.
  • Classic Hits WKIX-FM "Kix 102 FM" rises to a 6.5, which according to RadioInsight.com is the highest share for the frequency since its 1998 debut. This was a few weeks ahead of this week's addition of simulcasts at 102.3 (WKJO) and 102.5(WPLW) that will greatly expand Kix's coverage.
  • CHR competitors WDCG "G-105" is up slightly from their 46-year low for a 2.5 while WWPL "Pulse FM" is flat at 2.0 in its final survey before losing its reliable coverage in the western half of the market with WPLW 102.5 joining in the KIX 102 trimulcast.
  • G-105 is still beaten by its HD-2 channel for the third period! Classic Hip Hop '95-3 The Beat', is up to a 2.8.
  • The "WRAL News Plus" format (WRAL-FM HD3 and translators 96.5 in Durham/99.3 in Raleigh) goes from a 0.2 to a 0.3. Slow but steady growth since their debut.
  • I'm interested to see how the changes at Curtis Media this past Monday impact the next few months for Kix, Pulse, and Oldies WKIX (AM).

It seemed like WRAL-FM took a while to go all-Christmas. In 2021 they were all-Christmas in the first week of December, but this year they didn't go all-Christmas on the weekdays until the second or third week of December, which seemed like a puzzling decision. The December ratings period ended on December 7th, and they were definitely not all-Christmas on that date. I was disappointed when I tuned to 101.5 expecting Christmas music but instead heard Bruno Mars. I expect we'll see a boost for WRAL-FM during the next ratings period, but I am curious as to why they waited so long to go all-Christmas.

According to Wikipedia, the new Pulse FM translator is W281CP.

The was originally on 104.1 FM and licensed to Roxboro. Here's the Radio-Locator page. Curtis filed to move the translator from Roxboro to Hillsborough and change the frequency from 104.1 to 103.7 in June of 2022. The FCC granted the construction permit on August 17, 2022. W281CP now broadcasts from the same tower as WPLW-FM. Curtis must have just turned on the new translator as I've never heard anything local on 103.7 before.

The new frequency at 103.7 is pretty close to WNNL at 103.9 but I guess there weren't any better options.

103.9 is Directional to the south

I also don't understand why an AC station would wait till well into December to go all-Christmas. Doesn't WRAL management believe the ratings? When a station flips to All-Christmas, its ratings go up, usually into double-digits. OK, maybe you think it's a gimmick.

But are high ratings a bad thing? You don't really believe more people like to tune in and hear your station?

WRAL has not gone all-Christmas for a while now. They do all Christmas for Thanksgiving and the following weekend, then put out a calendar on social media that has the all-Christmas days, it's usually Fri afternoon-Sun. Then they flip fully about a week before Christmas itself.

They have made moves in the past that look strange on the surface but are to protect the demographics of the station. Remember when Gene & Julie got fired? Great numbers, but demos too old.
