Decline of the Providence board

My god, all of the topics have something to do with talk radio and half of those half to do with WSAR... you have GOT to be kidding me. You can't tell me there are that many people interested in who is doing PM drive at WSAR. This is absolutely ridiculous.

This board used to be a good place for people to vent and discuss different stations, personalities etc. Now it's become a place for 3 or 4 people each with 10 different names to bitch about radio stations that fired them from their board-op jobs.

Is it possible to get a seperate board for Providence talk so these losers can piss and moan about how they're janitors and not in radio???? I'm starting to get fed up.

I agree with you & it's nothing against WSAR itself, but I find myself avoiding talking about stations, personalities, music, formats, etc because the interest isn't there. I don't even care if people disagree with any ideas I might post. At least it's discussion. I won't criticize personalities because I'm a "do unto others" guy, but like to talk radio. Of course, I also have 3 months of free XM with a new car so I have to admit I'm getting a little removed from terrestrial after morning drive but I haven't decided if XM is permanent or not.

Oh COME ON O S S ! Don't you want to hear more about Keri of WSAR?
How about WALE?
How about JB 105?
The World Tomorrow?
Paul Harvey Sex talk?

boooooooooooooooooooo

This board goes through spurts of focusing on one station at a time. At least that is the trend I have noticed here. It's frequently WPRO, a couple of weeks ago it was True Oldies. This past week conversation has been about WSAR. Nobody is stopping the intelligent people from posting. It's their choice if they don't want to.

The unintelligent people are stopping the intelligent people from posting

I suppose that the state of the Providence radio board is similar to the state of Providence radio itself... it sucks. Too much voicetracking, making playlists bland and not taking any risks is what is hurting the market, and every time I visit RI from Boston, I keep seeing more and more of those little satellite radio antennae on the tops of cars. On the FM side, WBRU and WCTK are the only 2 Providence area stations worth listening to right now. If I knew more Spanish, I'd probably listen to WKKB more as well. The other major FM stations, which are all corporately-owned, sound corporately owned. I would never imagine that B101 would be in such a sad state of affairs as it is today, with afternoon drivetime being voicetracked out of town and having 6-hour long airshifts. At least they seem to be more on-point musically. I'm not as informed, or interested in the AM side, which is probably why I barely even look at the Providence board anymore, so I can't say too much about that. And yes, I am aware that similar things are happening around the country, it just seems that Providence is and has been hit hardest over the past several years.

I guess that talk radio has a place, here, since this is a board about Providence radio...however, what is the obsession with WSAR ? ???
1: a persistent disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling; broadly : compelling motivation <an obsession with profits> (from Merriam-Webster.com)

You guys are right. I agree that there's definately a place for discussion on talk radio here. I'm more than open to that. But it's just glaringly obvious that there are a few people who are disgruntled former/current employees who want to use this board as a means to slam their respective stations.

Consider too that it's difficult to pick things apart when no one is doing much more than operating on cruise control and how long can people keep emphasizing that. It won't change anything. HJY really hasn't lost momentum. PRO-FM still has no competition. COAST keeps coasting. I think the music is getting a little harder (When I Come Around???) but it takes more than that to make them hot. I takes a change in image and they seem incapable of doing that. I also think for a female targeted station they seem to try to alienate females. Can you say "euthenasia"?

Exactly. So......by this time next week, WSAR will fade back into the obscurity which it so richly deserves.

These things really do come and go. After all, doesn't anyone remember the infamous thread that seemingly would never die......the one about WHJJ gaining and WPRO losing? ;)

in the last 3 days, I've driven though most of Ri. I cant get 1480am period.
Its good to see Shuffle post again! :)

It's not easy. WSAR has a good signal for about 10 mles West of Somerset. That will get you to about the State line. Then the static begins. Generally AM signals and automobiles don't go well together. The AM frequency is very sensitive to electrical impulses. The engine running causes all kinds of static on AM. Either the engine needs to be off (or) you need to be listening to a radio in your house to pick up a decent signal in Eastern Rhode Island. Western Rhode Island is pretty much a lost cause. My former boss lived in Cranston. When I was hired by WSAR he tried listening to my show. He said he had to go down to the basement and tip the radio on it's side to even get the signal.

Yet we landed a man on the moon...go figure.

As I mentioned in another post, WSAR is directional, with a null to the WSW to protect 1480 in NYC. That's why the signal goes to hell after you go into RI.

Imagine, we're talking about a station that CAN'T be heard in most of Rhode Island and where it is able to be heard, next to nobody listens. = The decline of the Prov. board.

It's just the decline of Rhode Island Radio. Not a whole lot of changes going on at the moment with the exception of The Score a few weeks ago. This WSAR stuff is just inbetween chatter.

As others have said, it is the decline of Providence radio which is reflected in the quality of topics and posts in general here.

How much is there to say about an I-Pod plugged into a 50kW Transmitter?

Matters will only continue to get worse as Citadel and Clear Channel collapse under their own weight. Once these groups fracture and the stations are sold off, either to local owners or to more than two major groups, then we might have something to start talking about again.

Cookie Cutter Radio. To many stations that sound the same = BORING RADIO. There arn't to many creative types to be found anymore. So WHO is to blame? Is it the Gerneral Managers and Programs Directors, or is it The OWNERS who lay down these narrow and specific guidelines to follow?

There's only so many times one can handle the "When are they going to finally fill nights" conversation...hard to discuss things when things stay the same
