Decline of WFMY-TV 2 News

Now that Sandra Haughes has retired, WFMY-TV 2`s News seems empty and with very few anchors or reporters. Are they planning to shut down the news operation on WFMY TV 2? It looks like they are on a shoestring budget!
 
You don't just shut down a news department just because one person leaves, especially at a Channel 2.

By the way, who's Sandra Haughes?

Nothing seems to have changed at news 2 other than one face. One female anchor left and she was replaced by another female. Carol Andrews, the lady who is filling in has been doing weekend anchor duties for several months at channel 2. She's a very familiar face having been full time with WGHP Fox 8 a few years ago. She has a lot experience and I would like to see her just step in and carry the ball on the evening newscasts. The cutback in the news staff has been very apparent ever since they cut the co-anchor and the sports director positions. In my opinion the problems at channel 2 can be traced to GM Debra Hooper. Channel 12 & 8 seem to have full staffs in their news departments. If the other station have made staff cuts, it not as visible on the air as channel 2.
 
All of these posters miss my point!!! WFMY-TV 2 News has been going downhill for about 5-6 years. The staff has been decreasing at a very rapid rate. Clips on You Tube document how the QUALITY has gone downhill. Poor Frank is a nice guy, but seems better suited for hosting a Game Show, etc. He would be great on a NEW "Dialing For Dollars"-LOL.
 
As most of us are "insiders", we can say what we need or want. But the fact is that while WFMY may have cut back, they are still getting the numbers they need. Stations around the country are having to justify each and every staff member.

Public Service commitments of news are gone, so if news can't be a revenue generator; you can look for it to disappear (as with ABC's WXLV.)
 
Yea, but that is a limit to how much a station can cut back!!!! Ireally like Frank, Eric and most of the on-air folks at WFMY-TV 2. For the most part, they seem down to earth and not "stuffy" or "plastic" like some local stations across the country. But all of the cutbacks have really hurt WFMY TV 2. They have ONE poor sports guy. Some nights, Frank has to do SPORTS!!! It is a trowback to the 1950`s!!! One night, I expect to see Frank and Eric sitting at the News 2 Desk showing viewers some new "card" tricks!!-LOL Would be nice to see Frank do a local game show, though. I would love to see a local "Dialing For Dollars" come back!

Gannett and all of them are has been's Micken's is awful, Rivera is not much better, and Tracy whatever needs to go work in a Beauty Salon! Needs to wipe some grease off! Just My humble opinion! P. S. I know Debbie Hooper, GM and I can talk because I worked for Gannett in Florida!
 
I just think that it is so sad to see how WFMY-TV 2 News has declined just in the past 3 years or so.... Certainly loosing Sandra Hughes really hurts too, as she was a main force on-air there since 1972. Just go to Youtube and check out some of the clips from a few years ago, and then watch TV 2 live today. Very sad!!!! Is Sandra TOTALLY gone from WFMY??? I have seen markets where someone with a very long tenure like that, sticks around a little on air. For example, Joe "Mr. Knowzit" on WIS-TV 10, Columbia, SC WAS TV 10 for many years (starting in 1962). He retired about 10 years ago, but still is seen doing weather every Friday on various WIS-TV newscasts. They call him "Joe Friday" now-LOL.
 
I used to enjoy coming here and reading the different threads now it juts angers me to read half these posts

I remember when Lee Kinard only did weather!

Now that I think about it, it hasn't been the same since Randy Jackson left for "American Idol"!

Sandra Hughes was a wretched anchor who could barely read two lines before she mispronounced a word or got a name wrong. And what was with her coughing and clearing her throat on the air? I havent' heard that much phlegm since the glory days of Harry Caray.

I know, I know...Sandra Hughes was a "legend." Or a "legacy." Or some damn thing. Anyway, she had conned the viewing public that she was important enough to deserve a six month farewell. We can't miss you, dear Sandra, unless you for-Chrissake LEAVE! Which she finally did. Thank God.

Those who think the good old days were represented by that backwards cracker Lee Kinard should do the world a favor and commit suicide as fast as possible.

Sandra Hughes must have done SOMETHING right!!! She was at WFMY-TV 2 for almost 40 years! Many viewers around here LOVE her! That is the most important thing!
 
20 years she worked for nothing, the last 20 for minimum wage!

Just curious. Is anyone in media good anymore in your opinion? And not just you, Ape. I'm talking about all the other old codgers that post in here. Seems like everyone you guys talk about are terrible in your minds. Please tell me, who is good?
