Defending Local Talk Radio from the Grave

A local talk show host passionately attacks an all-syndicated talk radio station and defends local talk radio.... in 1988!

In this grouping of airchecks you'll find discussion of many of the topics that have haunted talk radio ever since... local vs. syndicated, the public interest, even the then-recent repeal of the Fairness Doctrine! The host defending local talk radio and regulation versus syndication... was a self-identified conservative.

Sadly, he was killed in a traffic accident a few weeks after this show aired. It's not hard to imagine what he'd think of the talk radio universe in 2009. Here's one quote...

"There's been a lot of deregulation in a lot of things... and I ought to stand for deregulation... I'm supposedly a conservative... but when there is no longer stringent government control over an industry, it is time for that industry to take a hard look at policing itself... I think when a radio station operates with no local commitment but a power bill and a (FCC) file folder, something's wrong."

Listen for this classic line near the end of Segment 9 as the host backtimes to the top of the hour : "[more] after the news... THE NEWS ! THE LOCAL NEWS!"
