Defending Randy Michaels

The Levant quote that was cited in another thread on this board comes to mind...

And one other thing: Karma's a b!tch, ain't it?

For all he's done in the industry, I'll always associate Randy with The Power Pig in Tampa.

As someone who worked for Jacor/Clear Channel under the Randy regime, I can say that my respect his success was always tempered by uncomfortable feelings about the work atmosphere he tried to create. Some people like working for a boss who acts like an a--hole; it just wasn't my cup of tea.

I like working with classy people. In fact I once walked away from a job at a station that was about to change from their long time country music format to "The Lady on 1320 for Singles Only". Read swinging singles. It came across very sleezy.

The night before the format change the PD got on the air and baited the listeners by making fun of the music, insulting the audience and smashing records on the air. He started taking calls without a delay and naturally the listeners cussed him out live. How they every got away with this I'll never know.

I was hired for 7pm to midnight but came in and told them I wasn't about to work there if that's what they were going to do. I really needed a job too but I didn't want to be a part of that. It didn't last long anyway, maybe about 3 months and it was gone, off the air. The owners had to sell the station and it came back on as MOYL.

The PD moved on and became the PD of a big station in Chicago so there ya go. As for me I never got that far but I never regretted my decision.

As for Randy Michaels, I only know what I've read about him. None of it has been good, going back to the "Power Pig" days.

Randy Michaels has acquired a negative rep as a result of some of the recently reported antics that happened on his watch in Chicago, and some of the things Clear Channel has done to cheapen its programming (most of which, in all fairness, happened after he left, and a lot of the rest reportedly ordered by the controlling family over his objection)--by the same token he's won a lot of respect for creative programming, promotion, and even technical and engineering initiatives. He deserves his due for advancing some important aspects of the state of the broadcast art.

He's become wealthy enough by all accounts that he probably could kick back and take it easy the rest of his days. Hopefully he won't--he'll instead find a new venue to try new and creative ideas to shake up the business, because it probably needs it.And for his sake, hopefully he'll smooth off the rough edges...
