Defining "vacuous"

Went to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra Saturday night at Wachovia Arena. Excellent show.

KRZ "sponsored" show, complete with a Rocky and Sue on-stage intro. So Rocky and Sue trot out on stage with two uniformed Marines. Each ticket sold, one dollar went to Toys-for-Tots. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 21,000 dollars raised. Excellent again.

So...vacuous? Well, the 21 grand came from the ticket sales...but that didn't stop Rocky and Sue from whipping out an oversized check with a KRZ logo on it. Now, if maybe KRZ matched the 21 grand I could see it, but they had nothing to do with that money raised. By rights, the check ought to have had mine and everyone else who bought a ticket's name on it.

Okay, cheesy and exactly what you'd expect from a cheap grab at promotion from radio...but that's not the vacuous part. That was left to Sue. She introduced the Marine captain and sergeant and then she actually said, "How about those Marines, they do a great job."

If that's not some bulls_ _ t piece of mindless fluff that just tumbled out of her mouth the goal of which was solely to let her end her on-mic spiel in a declarative sounding sentence, I don't know what is. Like we need some reminder from Sue about what the Marines do or that the Marines need a pat on the back from her. I know she was referring to the Toys-for-Tots program, but it came out as dismissive and obsequious and cloying and full of "I'm from the radio and my God-given ability to BS means no matter what I say it is after all about me and not the message". Sloppy and careless and embarassing.

I almost wish those Marines had a rifle in their hands and one of them just whacked her in that big jowly jaw of hers just to give her a little sample of what it is that Marines really do.
