Definition of an aircheck

I am a big radio geek (as described by my name). I also happen to have Asperger's, and its somewhat hard for me to describe things to people (and somehow offend people when I what I say doesn't mean something bad). I was telling my Dad the other day about some software I'll be getting to start recording airchecks. He asked what an aircheck is. I try to tell him its a piece of an audio recording of you or someone else and you either trade it or keep it as part of a collection. He was still confused by it, and by this point, I can't really think of another way to describe it. Later on, he was against it because I'm "obsessing over it too much" and "wasting my time" and "pointless." How else would I be able to describe it to make it where it isn't "nerdy" or where there is a positive side to it?

Well any hobby could be considered "nerdy" and "pointless" to some people like restoring an old car to collecting butterflies, but simply put an Aircheck is a recording of a broadcast from Radio or TV station. People have different reasons why they Aircheck, some people record and collect and trade for the nostalgia of their younger years (listening to a Aircheck of a station from their high school years) some for the historical aspects (like newscast of major events like 911 or pearl harbor.) Some so they can hear what a station sounds like from another city, state, or country. As someone in radio i have always loved all aspects of this business even Airchecking. Good luck with your collection and if you need any help getting things hooked up you can always ask here and someone will be glad to help you get things going. If you are looking for FREE recording software you can always download Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
