We all agree that certain songs hold a place in our respective hearts. Therefore, these songs have a dignity. For the ones that receive airplay, can that dignity be compromised? Here's the ugg-leeee truth:
"Airplay Replacement". As a collector, I recently purchased an Australian import CD: Dobie Gray "Drift Away"/"Loving Arms" 2-on-1, with 3-bonus tracks. It is unconfirmed as to whether the product is remastered or not, but the sound is the cleanest that I've heard of his material. Locally, on air, "Drift Away" always sounds muddy...all lower end, not crisp! On this disc, the percusion is there, and the strings are back. In '72 it was a hit, with Top 40 on it, later Oldies formats, and then an AC staple. A few years back, an Awww-ful performer, Uncle Cracker, talked Dobie into a reboot-duet. It got airplay, netted Gray a little money, then it bumped his original to the Oldies closet, and stole his staple! Did Dobie screw the pooch?
To me, the remake is trash. Regardless to how high it climbed, I would have never granted it airplay, but during that time, I would have doubled the rotation of the original. In the aftermath, I have often wondered how Gray (now) feels about it. Both the blurb sticker, and the liner notes make a hard statement: "--still the Definitive version.". So, Board Posters,...How Say Ye?
