Defunct award shows

Recently, Fox announced they're launching the American Country Awards, set to broadcast in December. To go along with the CMA, Academy of Country Music, and CMT Music Awards, the ACAs will be country music's fourth major awards show.

Now this news reminds me of other award shows that were not as big as the big ones like the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, or MTV Movie/Video Music Awards.

When the 1973 Grammy Awards were held in Nashville, ABC didn't want to be involved in it any more after two years and CBS picked up the rights. In response, Dick Clark created the American Music Awards for ABC; they used to be in January but moved them to November in 2003, meaning that year, we had bi-annual AMAs!!

But one defunct awards show that comes to mind is the Cable ACE Awards, which were cable's answer to the Emmys and used to be simulcast on several outlets before moving to TNT sometime in the '90s. But by then, the Emmys were starting to recognize cable, the need for a separate show became unnecessary, and the Cable ACEs were folded in 1998.

Were there any other short-lived award shows you can remember?

It's the Saturn Awards, and they still do them, but not televised anymore.

There was also...
American Comedy Awards (1987-2001)
American Television Awards (1993, one time)
Vibe Awards (2003-07, and who can ever forget that stabbing incident in 2004)
Billboard Music Awards (1990-2007)
Soul Train Music Awards (1987-2007)

Remember years ago the AFI awards? Those awards were presented to some of the greatest actors in show business; James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, and Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson and Sean Connery just to name a few.

I don't remember the last time that awards show was televised.

I've always maintained that awards shows are not that entertaining to watch, plus the acceptance speeches become repetitive after a while. Perhaps that is why AFI is no only being broadcast.

The AFI also honored directors. I watched an AFI lifetime achievement award ceremony on one of the cable channels last year. Problem is they seem to have run out of names with the stature of those you mentioned. But like Miss America, also on cable, they are still around but far less prominent.

Actually, Morgan Freeman was just announced as the next Lifetime Achievement AFI award recipient, to be awarded in June. I'm not sure why such a way-in-advance announcement, though.

Another for the list would be the Soap Opera Awards, which aired annually till 2000 on NBC, then once more in 2002 on SoapNet. I'm not sure why they went away; the ballot was a popular yearly staple in Soap Opera Digest, and was the basis for the Awards process. They did have a few years where it seemed some categories felt a bit like the ballot-box was stuffed, but it wasn't too bad a show, and a pretty good alternative to the Daytime Emmys.

Reminds me of the line uttered by Robb Westaby (I think) on WOWO back in the early 80's talking about the new competitor to the CMA's and ACM's..."Oh God, Not Another Country Music Awards Show!" One very good awards show that I only remember airing once was the Television Academy Hall Of Fame Awards, which IIRC was done by the Museum Of Broadcasting (now called the Paley Center). Some of the people inducted were Johnny Carson, Ernie Kovacs, and ABC founder Leonard Goldensen. Just a really classy, well done show.

Don't forget the Family Television Awards, which aired on the WB for a couple of years.
(2002-2003, to be exact)

There was also the Rock 'N' Roll Music Awards that came on CBS in 1975 and 1976 and then NCB in 1977. They were created in responce to the Grammies often overlooking Rock Music in favor of Middle of the Road/Easy Listening music. When such one hit wonders as the Starland Vocal Band and a Taste of Honey were winning Grammies over acts that have continued to make music years later, I can understand why the awards came about.

If I may correct you, you mispelled NBC as NCB.

Could be that there just aren't all that many soaps any more, unless you count the nighttime dramas on the CW...we lost Guiding Light and As The World Turns just in the last year or so. So as the remaining ones gradually fade out and get replaced by talk and game shows, no need for the awards, I guess...

Was the 2001 cancellation due to 9/11?
It was probably not worth SoapNet's while to continue the show beyond the one year they did it.

I don't know about cancelled awards shows, but how about cancelled categories? Didn't the Grammys at one time have an award for best disco record/song, or something like that? ;D

I believe the Grammys did offer such a category however that was gone by 1980 at the eariest.

How about this for a now defunct awards show..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CableACE_Award

One year I believe the Ace was aired by one of the cable networks as my cousin at the time felt it was..well odd to have seen Pat Robertson for CBN/700 Club sitting a few tables away from Marylin Chambers for her work on Cinemax. For some reason I am thinking A&E in their early days had aired this but I could be wrong.

I believe Ben Stiller had appeared on one Ace when he was very young boy since his parents Jerry Stiller & Ann Meara as I can recall had won a few Ace awards for their work on HBO Sneak Preview.

I seem to recall the Blockbuster Awards for a year or two. But given that the company is almost defunct, I guess it's not surprising that their awards show never really made it.

I remembered it too:
The Blockbuster Entertainment Awards (Wikipedia reroutes to the Blockbuster company, while IMDb lists 4 years-- 1998-2001 --they list the first 2 years as having aired on UPN, the third doesn't say, and the fourth was on Fox... not sure if it aired any other years or not, and the third IMDb listed awards show (2000) likely aired on either UPN or Fox)

I'm guessing there were just too many awards shows and that there could have been a problem regarding Blockbuster as an ongoing company plus most of the awards timeframe overlapped the time when Viacom owned Blockbuster.

The Soul Train Awards are actually back on, airing on BET's Centric...the new owners of the Soul Train franchise re-launched it in 2009, and its most recent edition took place this past November. There was a spin-off of the Soul Train Awards, the Lady of Soul Awards (as it implies, it honored female R&B singers) that took place each year between 1995 to 2006.
