WBBI-FM back to Country... out of the gates in the late 90's it had a very strong debut, ownership at the time screwed with that success and as you know it eventually went away. maybe the station can do better if they can keep a format on the air for more than a few books.

What did the ratings look like the last time WBBI was Country and what are its chances now going head to head with the Hawk, the heritage Country station in the market?

what did the ratings look like? thats a broad question in a nutshell from the spring to the fall 98' book, overall numbers doubled, the strength was in women from all categories with increases as much as 7-8 points over the spring 98' book, and in some cases BBI bested sister a/c wmxw's numbers and more than held its own with other stations in the cluster, close 2nd and nearly beat the hawk in some categories, not bad for a debut. so what did management do with a great start on a new station? they fired the morning show, that, along with other changes eventually killed the station through time. what will they do against the hawk? depends on how vulnerable they are, and IF CC is making a big mistake to go there again or they see a weakness in the hawk right now... time will tell. the hawk has a big signal, BBI does not, Classic Hits should have worked, since no one was doing it, so i'm skeptical about the return to country against a Heritage station like the Hawk...

Binghamton radio seems to be a trainwreck...except for WJOB and occasionally Out 97 ;D
i don't know where radio anywhere is not a train wreck...

If I recall, WBBI did okay when owned by Marc Steenbarger. Clear Channel hired the Breakfast Flakes when they got fired by the Hawk. For one book they practically tied the Hawk as they debuted Glenn and Heather. During the 2nd book with the Flakes, numbers were significantly down and the Hawk was back to their high ratings and CC fired the Flakes.

You're right on Steve. I remember B having about a 3 - 5 share 12+ during the first few books ( not bad for a new station ). The fall 2000 book was the first for The Flakes, and B went to a 7 share 12+, and if I remember correctly, Hawk went down to an 8 or 9 share. B stayed there for the Spring 2001 book, but the Fall '01 book was when B went down to a 3 12+. I think it was early March '02 when The Flakes were let go, and the station never seemed to rebound. B could have went back up if Doug was allowed to do what he wanted to do as a programmer, (sarcastic) but too many corporate suits knew better than he did, and it continued to bomb. Same thing happened to Star. Glenn Turner had all of his ideas shot down, and Wild continued to kick Star's ass all over the place. All ancient history now, but just goes to show what did/can happen.

Some corrections...Someone said no one is doing classic hits?? WCDW is clearly classic hits. They have been playing an ever increasing diet of 80's songs and staying away from pre 64. Mediabase KOOL in Phoenix, for example and WCDW is very much the same. KOOL is the poster child for classic hits. Longest running format is WNBF...although it was news/full service AC up to about 1985. The Hawk came on in the mid 80's (84-85?) WKGB came on in early 89 beating WMXW by more than half a year. Of course WSKG really owns the title of longest.
