Deland Tower Falls

Reading of this, I am reminded of the WCFB tower that collapsed a few years ago.

Brevard County is probably the next most likely to have a tower fall, most likely up in Mims.

If I was a betting man, I would say it would be the tower over in Ormond at WELE.

I have been to both of those site and I have to agree with you Bob...I would say WELE too. Sad thing is the amount of homes near that tower.

Tower number 4 is self supporting and bent in half during Frances I think and they just capped it at half and put a tower light on it. The other 3 are guyed. So, which one of the four to fall first? 1,2,3, or 4 the half self supported?

If there were ever an accident at the 1380 tower site such as towers falling, there's a very real chance many innocent people would get hurt due to the fact that all four WELE towers sit directly in the center of a mobile home community situated directly behind the WELE building. Hopefully an accident of that type will never happen!!!

Does not the Gate Rule apply to the DeLand Tower?

Radio geek question: Now that WTVJ is off-the-air, how far inland can you hear the 1490 in Brunswick, GA?

(I remember sitting on Daytona Beach and hearing Brunswick dominant on that channel with Deland barely audible underneath.)

The real question is whether or not it will ever be rebuilt. A 400 foot tower with todays wind loading standards will cost a few dollars! Bet the city fights having it rebuilt there. A short 1/4 wave tower on 1490 with a new ground system and new property would probably exceed $125,000 plus. Just MHO

The licensee should have had the tower insured for "Replacement Value" in which case the insurance company will pay the tower re-build cost. There's also a possible case where the person responsible for the tower fall, accident or otherwise, can be legally liable for damages...
