Delaware 105.9

Any thoughts on the new Delmarva Broadcasting talk station in Milford? I listen at times online (I'm out of state) and I hear lots of technical issues -- though I suppose some or all could be strictly with the web feed and not on the air.

I gave it a listen last time I was in the area. The tech issues are just the webfeed, I didn't hear any on-air. It was nice hearing some non-political non-sports local talk on the radio, deep down I wonder how long it'll last though?

Good start for Delaware 105.9. I do think their news is weak compared to WGMD. Mark sounds too stiff. Traffic sounds flat, and I hope the topics improve. Competition is always good, and having two local talk stations is always better than one. I like the idea of a noon news hour, but please go local not international. Allan is a great interviewer, but how about Delaware topics, not all of the international interviews. He needs some local phone numbers in his contact list. When it comes to weekends, what happened to live and local? Many times big stories happen on the weekend. WXDE is a good start, but it still has a way to good. One thing, the signal is much better than WGMD to the north, and west. 92.9 in Dover (on a tower north of Dover) kills WGMD.

Allan does a lot of political interviews now as the election is only a month and a half away. He brings in some interesting guests and I personally enjoy these interviews. After election day, that will drop off other than when some breaking issue comes up.

The international interviews is one of Allan's fortes and passions. Sometimes they are dull, but depending on what's going on in the world, they can be right up to the minute and worth the listen. When they are not of interest, I scan the dial, but other times the interviews are interesting and they end too quickly.

Local topics, boring. So how much can you beat a dead horse on sand replacement along the coast (that the tax payer gets to pay to have placed on some rich guy's private beach, or which Sussex County politician burned tires this week in a farm field, etc, etc)?

I worked with Mark Fowser at WILM. Mark is an excellent newsman and broadcaster. His style isn't a loud "top 40" voice. He has a quiet style, that is very listenable. Mark's and Allan's styles are not the same. Both are excellent at what they do.

As to live and local on the weekends, WXDE is already spending some serious money for their weekday live and local programming (when the audience is the largest and the spot load is the heaviest to pay for the staff). Most stations do more from "the bird" on weekends as fewer listeners, fewer local spots to pay the cost. Remember radio is a business, and they are in business to make money for their stock holders or owners, etc. Most talk stations are on the bird weekdays and weekends. So WDEL and WXDE as well as Baltimore's WBAL are doing more local programming than most talk stations, but local programming is not cheap.

It wouldn't surprise me if eventually WXDE starts carrying either Phillies or Orioles baseball and Eagles or Ravens football. The Phils and Eagles might be a winner as only WDEL carries the Philly teams in Delaware and their signal is pretty bad that far down state, especially at night. There may already be a station downstate or in OC that carries O's and Raven games.

Delaware 105.9 is such a breath of fresh air if you like radio. Ever since Gaffney left WGMD, all they do is politics. Meaning harp on Left vs Right. The local hosts want to be local Rush Limbaugh's. Can we get some good local talk WGMD? Oh wait...thats when we turn on Delaware 105.9

The Eagles are already on WXDE's sister station Eagle 97.7. The Ravens are on Great Scott's Rock Station WZBH. Neither baseball team is on. The Phills would be the best choice and best money maker. I know there is a demand for them in Lower Delaware.

Was down at the beach today and caught some of the mid day news with Allan that was anchored by my ole friend from WILM, Mark Fowser. A good newsblock. Good to hear Allan and Mark on Delaware 105.9. I noted 105.9 airs the CBS update on the 0:31:00 where as WDEL was airing a spot and more local news. WDEL was really coming in quite well at Rehoboth. It was driving my wife nuts as I kept going back and forth to hear both stations.

It is good that Mark is back on the air full time. Did you notice that after DBC picked him up a year or so ago, posts on Allan's blog from a MarkRice suddenly stopped appearing? Very anti Mr. Loudell hate filled posts. Just a coincidence? I think not.

Jhguthlac, are you saying that you believe Mark Rice is actually Mark Fowser? No, that can not be the same person. Mark Fowser is a very mild mannered person, good news man, good supervisor ( he took over Allan's duties after Allan left WILM for WDEL) and just a decent guy. The types of posts that Mark Rice tended to post were full of anger and "a superior attitude", etc, that seemed to be his trade mark on WDEL's blog, but were nothing like the man I knew as Mark Fowser at WILM (talk about Jekyll and Hyde).

There may have been some other former employee at WILM that Allan might have ticked off, maybe was let go by Allan, who could have been writing to Allan's blog at WDEL and using the name of "Mark Rice", but I'd be hard pressed to believe it was Mark Fowser (I don't remember anyone being fired or let go while I was at WILM, but then again I only worked weekends so that could have happened and I may not have known about it).

I believe, Mark Fowser had been working part time (since his days at WILM) at KYW, WHYY-FM, and WDEL. It wasn't until WXDE picked him up which was his first full time gig since WILM.

While I find it hard to believe it was him, the fact is the MarkRice posts at the same time Mark begn to appear on KYW and WDEL.
