Delilah an island unto herself on Star 99.9

When I discovered Star 99.9 several years ago it was a soft station with middle-aged hosts targeting the middle-aged female demographic. I don't think you need a radio expert to notice the dramatic changes that have occurred at Star. It's not just the completely new airstaff. WEBE for the most part remains the same as it's always been, a soft pop station that targets the middle aged demographic with long-time veterans in the form of Storm N Norman and Danny Lyons, along with safe family-friendly syndicated programming in the form of John Tesh. In other words the station has a consistent tone from day to night, even with Robbie Bridges being the youngest of the airstaff.

If you look at Star though it's interesting how Delilah is the only show remaining that represents the olden days of Star. From 3am to 7pm Chris Eagan and the station appears to be gunning for more of a Z100 and WPLJ feel. In the mornings Mike Mcgowan is an older guy but there's no denying that he's a far cry from John Harper and Charlie Connelly, both of whom were much more formalistic. Then you've got Jason Drew and Chris Eagan, both of whom are young, hip and edgy. The station just undeniably has a different feel to it these days. That's why I find it interesting and noteworthy how despite all those changes Delilah has survived and remains a fixture at the station despite being diametrically different from the rest of the station these days.

It depends on how you define olden days. To the best of my recollection, the first incarnation of WEZN as Star was around September 1996 to compete directly with WEBE after being perceived for many years as an easy listening station. I remember them as 99-POINT-9 (emphasis on point). Before that they were "EZ 100 FM" around the late '80's-early '90's, and before that they were Beautiful Music. I do not recall when Delilah first came onto the scene in Bridgeport but I took her presence as a sign of a cost-cutting move which is pretty much standard practice in the industry in these parts these days. Take it FWIW. Just an opinion.

Delilah represents cost cutting in radio. There's only one more annoying radio DJ than Delilah: Chunky on 92.3 Now. I remember Elizabeth Yates used to host Love Songs at Night on Star 99.9 many years ago, then she moved to WEBE, and now I don't know where she is anymore.

She probably got fed up with the corporate cogs like most of us pro's did and moved on to something more satisfying and profitable.
