Delilah Change..

I'm surprised with Easy 93.1 as competition that WLYF still sounds the same.

I believe WLYF is also trying to remain competitive against the two Hot AC's, WFLC and WMIA, in its area, so that's why they still sounds the same. Though WFLC just flipped to CHR just this past January.

I don't know what happened with her show anyways. There used to be requests for really sappy stuff - love songs from the 1970s and 80s. Then in the last couple years it's been requests for Adele, and Lady Gaga. What's going on? I thought Delilah was suppose to be a love song show - not a show with dedications for "adult top 40" songs.
That has been a common misconception with her program. I have heard Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" on her program. Okay for AC play (at least nowadays), but not really a "love" song.

4 or 5 years ago, the Delilah program still mixed in some occasional slow 80s and 90s ballads, but it's really all about what fits the format now. That's why I maintain the show's format is outdated for today's AC station. I think she's better suited for something like contemporary Christian. She speaks of her faith often, so I wonder if something like that could happen in the future?

John Tesh is actually on some CCM stations.

Actually, Delilah has been picked up recently by some contemporary Christian stations, such as WAKW/Cincinnati and KFSH/Los Angeles. No idea whether it's a customized Christian AC version of the show or just actualities, but at least in WAKW's case, they stay pretty close to the station's normal playlist.

In a way it's kind of amusing, with the reputation Delilah's show has and considering that Christian AC (like mainstream AC) has picked up tempo in recent years. (For a while WAKW was almost veering more toward Christian CHR than AC--and actually got moved over to BDS' Christian HAC/CHR panel for a few months--but they seem to have dialed it back just a hair since picking up Deliliah.)

I have noticed that she would occasionally play songs like "Go Light Your World" by Kathy Troccoli when she was on Mix 92.9. I don't specifically remember when this was, and it may have been right after 9/11.

Since Mix 92.9 dropped her, I can channel-surf and still hear her over Lite 98.7 out of Hopkinsville, and occasionally notice that she is playing something more uptempo than the live dj at Mix 92.9 is playing at the same time. (I live at the very edge of Lite 98.7's coverage area, so I am not sure if they still carry her or not.)

I remember a number of years back, WLIT Chicago dropped Delilah for a local show, hosted by Jon Symons (not sure if his name is spelled correctly), after he was dropped by WILV Chicago. Not even 8 months later, WLIT decides that they wanted Delilah back, & dropped Jon Symons. I forgot when WLIT dropped Delilah for the final time, & with the exception of an HD-2 or HD-3 channel on WLIT, she's no longer heard on Chicago radio. I remember back in 2002 or 2003, when Delilah got dropped in Milwaukee, due to the station changing formats. The station that picked up her show, realized that her show didn't fit the format, & I believe her show didn't last more than 2 on that station (originally carried on WLTQ, then went to WMYX, which is Hot/AC, or Adult CHR as it's being called today). I still hear her on WNSN South Bend Indiana, which is able to reach parts of Lake County Indiana with a faint signal (101.5 is an open frequency in the Chicago market)

Not to mention, that WLYF's sister Classic Hits WMXJ rebranded themselves from "Majic 102.7" to "Magic 102.7" with changes to the format to include more Classic Rock songs, fewer 60s songs, and a fair amount of 80s songs over . I'm surprised that didn't cause WLYF to back-off from the softer 70s and 80s songs nor it cause WLYF to add any more recurrent or current materials at all.

I guess having a Classic Hits that focus more on edgy Classic Rock tunes of the 70s and 80s, with few 60s included works well as a sister to an AC that focuses heavily on soft classic tunes of the 80s and 90s, with few 70s and safe currents and recurrents sprinkled in.

Thoughts on Delilah

I just saw this posted on an unrelated topic and didn't want to repsond to it there:

Delilah has generally not worked in PPM, but continues to work in diary markets. There is a difference between the two methodologies in that the diary measures cume, TSL and memory, while the PPM measures only cume and TSL. Apparently, Delilah listeners thought they were listening for greater time and wrote that down in the diary when they got around to it. When the PPM arrived in markets like Nashville, the TSL was much lower and other alternatives were found.

And now my repsonse:

Apparently if you're listening to Delilah, it just seems like you've been listening a long time.

I listened to a small portion of her show while traveling through Memphis last week. The music is a lot brighter, though I don't know if it's customized drops (a la John Tesh) or it it's a live version.

I remember hearing once that none of it is live, that what you're hearing are actually calls from the night before, produced into that night's show. I have no way of confirming that, but with the polished, almost over-produced sound that the show has, I have no reason to doubt it.

Apparently, WRVR in Memphis still carries Delilah. I have not checked lately. Meanwhile, here in Nashville, the female PD of Mix 92.9 made the decision a little over two years ago to drop Delilah. All hell broke loose on their Facebook page when they did. Occasionally, someone STILL asks about Delilah there.

Mix 92.9 replaced Delilah with Tom Kent on Friday and Saturday nights, and local programming the rest of the week. I could make a case that Kent doesn't really fit the AC format, but we really don't have a typical classic hits station for which Kent would fit the format. He was on the then-Oldies 96.3 (co-owned with Mix 92.9) and later on the very short-lived Oldies 97.1.

I really wish that we could have Kent on all week, but as it is, Mix 92.9 is breaking format to carry him. But they used to have a '70s music programming on Saturday nights back in the '90s, before Delilah took over. So in a sense, they are returning to what they had before Delilah.

In Chicago, Delilah is on WLIT-FM's HD-2 channel, since she no longer fit the station's current format. She hasn't been on Chicago's analog airwaves for I believe 8 years now. She's still on in South Bend Indiana on 101.5 WNSN South Bend. Maybe she works well in that market, or Schurz Broadcasting (owners of WNSN) finds Delilah cheaper to run from 7pm - midnight Monday - Friday, than to have someone local in that daypart. For Chicago, it's ironic that her show is part of the Premiere Radio Network, but the parent company, CC, doesn't want her program on their AC station (at least on the analog side).

Kent plays too much older 70s rock and disco stuff, and it doesn't fit well with today's AC standards. However, Kent DOES have an all-80s show which runs Saturday nights on some stations(our local AC station in NEPA mostly runs Backtrax USA on the same timeframe). Moreover, it seems bigger AC stations are slowly removing 70's and only focusing on the 80's, 90's, 2K, and current.

The Kent 70's show should only belong to classic hits, not mainstream AC. Only under any circumstances would today's AC format have an all-80's version of his show.

Reading comprehension 101, since you missed this earlier:

I think a lot of glitches are inherent in PPM, not that the diary method was perfect. Could it be that she speaks softly so her voice isn't PPM friendly?

I like her show and wish it was cleared in Detroit.

Not too long ago, her flagship station KRWM-106.9 in Seattle DROPPED her! They are looking for someone local to take over that 8P-1A slot. She tapes her show in Kitsap County, just across the water from Seattle, started on KRWM, and now dropped from KRWM. Pretty disgusting - not in the fact of the sappy love songs (not so much anymore, a LOT brighter Hot AC stuff, like Lady Gaga?!) but since her flagship station dropped her. KAFE 104.1 still airs her show.

Delilah, the person, seems so remote to a listener.

DELILAH: Hi Janet, this is Delilah
JANET: Oh Delilah, I'm so happy to get through to you. My mother passed away last week and she'd been listening to your show for 25 years. I've been thinking about her a lot this week.
DELILAH: So I remind you of all the times you'd call your mother and hear me in the background?
JANET: Yes, and all the love songs you played reminded her of my father, who died many years ago.
DELILAH: Let me play a song for you.

Segue into "Kokomo".

Who is this supposed to connect to?
